What's best for better mpg?
 

I'm new to this forum and have some questions.
I recently purchased an '06 F-150 Supercab withe the 5.4 flex engine.
Thanks to some awesome posts I have installed a Gott's CAI in the truck and have noticed a good gain in performance. (after 1st run about4 mpg increase).
I would like to add a better filter for less restriction ,but wondered if a K&N drop in filter would be worth the money since I don't put alot of miles on my vehicle. Also would I have to tune my chip after getting even more air in or would the computer handle the changes itself.
I love my truck , just wish the mileage were better !

Same reason I joined this site. Bone stock '06 F150 w/the 5.4 myself. Only thing that scares me is spark plug change.

A filter will help with flow. I would more suggest letting it exhale much better with a Magnaflow exhaust system.

You should upgrade the exhaust. Roush off-road/legal, mbrp are best bang for your buck. Magnaflow didnt impress me but the ones on here who have it flaunt it like a new child is born to them so you could try that.
Best thing to do is keep stock tire size.

4MPG by enlarging with the gott's mod?-i raise the bs flag on this one

I did the gotts mod on my dads 08 and it jumped 2 mpg's. if youre on the interstate then itl jump as much as 4

if that were the case-ford would have it 3" from the factory to meet their cafe #'s...

when i did my intake and exhaust it definately hepled out a couple mpgs

so you think were lying to sound cool on a forum...

what was before and after mileage?

Well consider this: Say someone drove their truck hard... Intakes usually help most at the mid to high rpm's if I am not mistaken so more air at the higher rpm's would result in better mileage. That doesn't mean it goes from 14/15-19/20 but it could be a gain from a low number to a 13-14 for example. Just a thought

I agree. 4 MPG is a HUGE increase in MPG.

Get an actual average over several tanks, not just one were you decided to calculate your mileage on a highway trip.

Thanks to all the responses, I didn't want to start any trouble. Here are my numbers.
Purchased my truck in Oct 08. I have had 21 fill -ups and discarding the in town
(in winter) short drives, I accounted for 11 of the fillups. My highway avg mpg was 15.8.
Now , two fill ups since the Gotts - 18.4. The main difference I got when I originally stated " about 4 mpg" increase was between a 120 mile trip to the lumber store and back (at 55-60 mph) and the "old " mpg of 14.6 with two 1/2 tanks of E-85 freeway driving thru Ill and Ind (at 65-70 mph) to Louisville. The E-85 was probably the major difference along with higher speed. I notice much easier engine response and much less downshifts on hill while in "cruise control". I too believe "Ford should do this from the factory" or at least a TSB to inform owners of a change.

e85=lower btu content,less power-knew there was more to it than going from the factory 2.5"to 3",that alone will not give you a 20% gain in mpg
