Flow 40's or 50's?

Still patiently (yeah, right) waiting on my truck to arrive- target date is now April 4. I have read all the posts here on exhaust- I think the way to go is the dual outlet Flowmaster with 3" pipes out the back. I don't want the exhaust to be too loud, though. Does anyone have a .wav file of the "50" series? Thanks

With dual 3" pipes out the back, you may lose lots of low end torque. Remember the factory system is only a single 2-1/2" all the way through. If you are just replacing the muffler on back, I would not go larger than 2-1/2" outlet pipes. From what you describe, a 50 will do fine. I like it louder and will swap my 50 series to a 40 series soon.

I have the factory 2.5" pipe leading into a 50-series flowmaster that exits via a single 3" pipe exiting in the stock location. Sounds fine to me with little resonance in the cab but plenty of 'music' when I drive with the windows down. I didn't notice any loss of low-end torque with this setup.

Texas,

Selva1 is right the flowmaster catback dual exhaust is only 2.5" & the 50's series muffler it comes with, sounds way better than stock!!!

Yeah, the 40 series is the loudest of the series. This is what I have, you can listen to my truck here: http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/ponysix8/images/T005.wav

Thanks for all the input. I guess I wasn't clear in the first post- I didn't mean 3" pipes all the way back, just 3" tips. I don't like the huge "coffee can" pipes coming out the back. I think the 50's catback with 3" tips is the ticket.

Now ANOTHER question- looking on the Flowmaster website they list 2 50 series mufflers- the "50 series 4 inch" and the "50 series 5 inch". What's the difference? Which should I get?

veloci Apr 10, 2000 10:09 PM

Texas 150,
make sure that you get the Delta series, otherwise you will have a drone inside the cabin at65mph or so. It will drive you nuts, i replaced my regular 50 with the delta 50 and it made a huge difference in the cabin drone and did not affect the performance of the muffler.

Well, the deed is done. Went last Friday to the muffler shop- they were just finishing up an F150 with the catback Flowmaster 40 series. So I went with the 40 series, and 3.5" tips on the 2.5" pipes. Man- when I first cranked it and started driving I thought "oh my gosh, this is LOUD!". I was trying to figure out how I was going to explain to the wife having 2 different exhaust syetems put on in 2 days. When I backed into the garage, she came out shaking her head. My boys (9 and 12) love the sound- the youngest says it sounds almost as good as Sebulba's pod racer in Episode 1. So I'm going to leave them on for now- not too loud, can't hear them at all at 45-50 mph, and a slight drone from 70-80. Not bad at all. Thanks again for all the input.

i have just recently (2 days ago) had a flowmaster delta flow 50 series with 3" inlet and 2@ 2-1/2" outlets put on my 1997 f150 4.6l. i have 2 borla duel intercooled tips on the ends exiting the right (stock) side location. being a delta flow, i did not expect it to be as load as it is. it's not bad mind you, but it seems more than the level they describe. i like it alot and have gotton many looks since then.

Thanks

The 40-series is louder than the 50-series.

Which of the 2 (40's or 50's) have the best deep bass tone/rumble-- at idle, crusin', and at full throttle(accelerating, not a 100mph)? Also, is it possible and/or wise to only replace the stock muffler... remove the factory one, replace it w/a 40 or 50 series, and use the existing(factory) pipe?

Bob's F150 Jun 21, 2000 06:01 PM

Has anyone put a Big Block series (70 I think) on? I had one on my 98 Ram 360 and it sounded great. Very deep mellow tone. From what the tech at Flowmaster told me is to go to a Big Block series and leave the stock tail pipe to keep my torque but gain HP. Since most of the time our engines do not run at high rpm's a mandrel bent pipe will not make as much difference. Any comments?
