Feeling Down
Feeling Down
Well, in light of the Excursion posts being soooooo minimal over the past, I'd thought I'd help liven it up, too.
Anyway, the darling wife and I had a 2003 V-10 Excursion we dumped in a heated rush in 2005 after gas prices rose and the Excursion was finally doomed. I pushed for a smoker in 2003, but the DW wouldn't have any part. If our Ex had a smoker, we'd still be driving it today. So, our 2003 went bye bye, and a Chr Chry Chrys Chrysler Pacifica (man, it's still hard to say it) took it's place. Well, out of the frying pan into the fire... the Pacifica is doomed now, too. So, I have always wanted to get another Ex, but it's hard after they were killed off in 2005.
Last week, I find this time capsuled 2005 Excursion calling my name. It's a smoker, and has been kept in a garage since 2005, and has only 6,800 miles on it. It's brand new. One like it will never come around again. I am salivating soooo bad, I am dehydrated. I'm pushing the DW to consider dumping her Pacifica while we have some serious equity in it, but she wants to pay it of in two years. I think in two years, the Pacifica will be worth squat, and then we'll only find an Excursion with the lowest miles being close to 70k, if we are lucky. If we consider a lightly used (comparable) Expedition in 2 years, we'll own a 2005 Pacifica that will return almost nothing, and then be faced with a monthly payment close to double of what we have now, and could have on this 2005 Excursion. This is a diamond in the rough.
I'd like to think that we could get this 2005 Ex and drive it 10 years and still be ahead even if diesel costs $0.60 more a gallon just because my wife only clocks 7-8k a year on the high side. The useage will only get to be more as our kids grow up and their friends come along on camping trips, not to mention carting the parents and in-laws around the older they get, too. I'd like the Ex to haul our 28 foot TT - even though I drive a F-250 smoker for a daily driver. Let's face it, the Excursion will never be reborn again just because of the tree huggers, and even if a smoker makes it to the Expedition in 2010, the vehicle will never have the tow capability of the Excursion just because of weight.
What do you all think? I'd have to stretch quite a bit to make it work, but nothing comes free, and I'd hateto look back in a year and kick myself. It will never come again. The economy and fuel prices have me thinking, as well, but all my worries about the Excursion values tanking after Ford killed it off were found to be worries for nothing. The values have remained incredible despite the vehicles bad press.
So, what would you do?

I was in a similiar situation.
I had what I wanted but didn't care for what the wife drove.
I tried to have some influence when it came time to replace hers but,
the bottom line was there are two vehicles, one was 'mine' and one was 'hers'.

Yeah, I went back the day I posted this to get it. It drove off the just before I got there. What a bummer. It sat for over three weeks without an interest by anyone. Needless to say, I haven't slept since, and I never knew how flexible I really am every time I kick myself in the a$$. WHAT AN IDIOT! Now, some dipstick dealer near Milwaukee has a bunch of them on the lot and is falsely driving up the prices in the area and won't really deal. I hope they rot with them. Well... it all happens for a reason.
Not to take this thread off topic, but I know the dealer you are taking about. They have a TON of diesel Excursions.
I bought my Ranger there in 1998 and they "mistakenly" charged me an extra $500+ in false fees I later found a week or so after I purchased the truck. I was 16 at the time. The fees were buried in the bill of sale document and if I wouldn't have looked it over closely I wouldn't have ever known. They did refund the fees after I questioned them about it.
Also when I was looking to purchase my Mustang in the summer of 2006, they wouldn't allow test drives on a GT because it was a high performance vehicle or some crap. I told them something along the lines of it's a $30000 Mustang not a Ferrari...I'm not going to buy a car without test driving it. He then went to "ask his manager."
I left while he was gone.
Beware if you consider buying from them!

I miss the excursions, I could only imagine a 08 with a 6.4, Harley or King Ranch trim. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAH! I saw a excursion on ebay a few months ago with an 08 front clip, looked great!

Vehicle are a bad investment period.
I don't see the sense behind dumping vehicles because you think they will lose value, they will reguardless.
Find something you like(like you seem to have now done) and just keep the darn thing. It's worth the money in the end, if you keep it until it has little or no life left.. THEN pawn it off and walk away with a few grand in your pocket.
