tail light assembly

I can't seem to remove the rear tail light assembly from my 1997 F-150. I've removed the two fasteners that are accessable with the tailgate down but I'm not sure about the clip/tabs referred to in the owners manual. The diagram is almost worthless. Has anybody done this? Please help!

Apply firm outward pressure to get the taillights housing off. Aside from the two bolts holding this in there are two retaining clips on the other side and "prying" will pull these clips out.
Don't scratch the paint. Use a rag cardboard something I slide some vacuum hose on a Phillips screwdriver

I pulled on mine until I thought they were going to break. That's when they popped out. I made sure to apply even pressure on the entire assembly. Little scary, but that is what it took for me.
