Question tachometer

Just purchased a '99 F-150 XL with 4.6 5-speed. Can an aftermarket tach be added? Does it have to be a special kind to be used with the distributorless ignition? Any recommended types or brands? Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi BQ

It was posted sometime ago on the aftermarket bd, and maybe here?

As i reall it can be done on the 99's...required some work where the wiring harness is connected to the pcm. As i reall? the tach. signal is picket up thru the pcm. The mod had to do with tapping into where the harness plugs into the pcm..running extra wire to tach....i think he used an auto-meter tach.

As i recall, Ford changed their elect. system in 99, thus not so easy to hook up tach, earlier models. no problem. Sometime ago i asked auto-meter...said their tach. wouldnt work on 99, but i think the guys that did it proved them wrong. Interesting.

I wanted to do the OEM cluster swap with tach... it was tried..problem was..the anti-theft (pats) is different in each cluster. You can swap out cluster, no problem (except $$$) but your ign. key may not work. If it dosent work. it was said you have to take it to a Ford dealer and get reprogram, so the pats systems(cluster) recognises your chipped key. Early 99's ok, but later 99's might not?

Dont quote me on any of this, but maybe it gives you the idea.

Anyhow, i gave up on it. I use the digital od mode for tach read out when i really think i need to know. Dont give up, it has been done. Maybe those guys are still around and will update?

Good luck...OT

Dakota Digital makes a couple of tach's that can be set for 1 to however many cyls. I have one set to one cyl and am running it off the discharge side of one of the fuel injector coils. The discharge side of the COP's was too noisy. Pretty grief free installation, but Dakota is proud of their tachs (mucho $$$$).
