Charging problem

Hey all, I have a 2000 F150 4.2 and have had no issues with it until last week. Driving along and the battery symbol shines on the dash. Because it's a truck that is used for dump runs and etc. I left it alone until yestersday while doing my dump run (its a few miles away) I was coming back and all the guages went dead and when I got it in the driveway, I attempted to restart it. NOTHING. Today I replaced the alternator with a remanufactured one and had recharged the battery and started it back up, guess what. lights still on (battery). Anyone have any other ideas what I missed?
Thanks

You seem to have missed the purpose of the battery light. See owner's manual.

Your battery isn't charging and you ran the battery dead....

Check the alternator field fuse in the engine compartment fuse panel ( it was moved there in 99 or 00 ).

Next check the wiring harness to the alternator. This sometimes can corrode or crack, causing similar symptoms to having a blown alternator field fuse.

Thanks all for the great info, I had forgotten to add to my post that I had put a fully charged new battery in as well. I get the idea though. Thanks again and I'll let you know what it is I find. Little cold in the Northeast to be playing garage mechanic. LOL
