Neat Way to Manually Close F150 Sunroof after Electrical Problem

The sunroof on my 2003 F150 4x4 got stuck in the open position today.
Forums say to manually close it you must remove the entire interior headliner or drill a hole at the sunroof motor in the headliner.

I found an easier way.

1. Find two plastic push pins in headliner near interior rear window. Pull out.
2. Rear of headliner can now be pulled down a few inches.
3. Open rear cab center sliding window.
4. Now exit cab, climb into the truck bed, stick hands through rear cab window and pull down headliner. You can now see above headliner where sunroof motor sits.
5. Sunroof motor is right in front of open window in center. There is a white/grey gearbox to the right of motor. On the gearbox is a small hole.
Insert 1/8" Allen wrench into hole, and turn clockwise to manually close sunroof.
6. Re-intall plastic push pins,

It's a little hard to fit hands above headliner and turn Allen wrench, but approx. 15 turns gets the sunroof closed.

This way took only 10 minutes!!! Pretty neat to fix problem while standing in the truck bed.

manually closing the sunroof

can you please advise and explain to me how to get those two plastic push pins out of the head liner? They are not just pulling out, is there a trick to this that I am missing?

Thanks for the help.

gjms,

The pins are hard to pull out. Try a needle nose pliers to get under the pin head and grab the pin itself first to loosen it a bit. Then pull hard with your fingers - should come out.

Thanks to this detailed description, I was able to manually close my moonroof on my 2002 F150 Supercab. To get some extra space under the headliner, I also ended up removing the center plastic push pin (it actually popped out by itself when trying to access the moonroof motor with the allen wrench)

Thanks!

using a ratchet with an allen socket would make for faster work

Re: Manually Close F150 Sunroof in Tilt Position

The information on how to close the sunroof using the 5/32" allen wrench into the gearbox after taking down the headliner is very helpful. However, when I turned the allen wrench several times, nothing happened. I realized that this discussion was about a sunroof that was open. What about a sunroof in the tilt position? Can it be cracked closed using the allen wrench in the gearbox method? If so, which way do you turn it and about how many times around will it need to be turned? Thanks!

Would it work for a 2010?

I did everything that was said on your post but as i looked there wasn’t an white/grey box on the right of the motor, it’s on the left, so i was wondering which little hole would the 1/8 allen wrench go in? Or is it different with the year make of each f150?

Easier way 2 minute fix

If this is the same issue we had on our 2003 king ranch there was a faster way for us. Just need about a 4mm Allen rench. About the middle of the roof over the back seat inside the cab there is a tiny hole. Insert Allen wrench. Turn clockwise about four times then you can use the button to close the rest of the way. Might not work for everyone but did for us. Two minute fix and not other opening or removal needed.
