Check your Cig lighter fuse.

I have an 02 and the OBD port doesn't work as well. Checked the fuse and it's good, still get power from the cig lighter. Hmm..

Do you have the right scanner, the later models need to have a "CAN" scanner, the older scanners will not work

You have a power port and cigar lighter. They are different fuses and should not be confused.

Loss of power to the PCM itself will also cause a failure to connect to the scanner. If your CEL/SES doesn't come on during proveout, you should investigate this path, not the cigar lighter/OBDII port power issue.

My fuse is listed OBDII / Cig Lighter, which is good. I also get power from the power port.

I don't know what the CEL/SES during proveout is...

My truck failed it's inspection because the OBDII port didn't connect to the state scanner. I plugged in my AutoTap and found that this didn't work either, although it had about 3 months ago.

I figure on Friday that I'll be under my dash with a meter and a magnifying glass...

Check for continuity between the cigar lighter and pin 16 of the OBD-II port (WH/BLU wire). Both are fed from fuse F2.3.

CEL proveout is the self-test on all the bulbs for about two seconds when the ignition switch is first switched to RUN.

No luck, all lines and fuses look good. It's off to the dealer.

Almost the same problem. I have an 08F250 and my hand held OBD doesn't work in the truck. Says it has an error trying to read the computer. It also says the same thing when I tried to plug in into my girlfriends 08 Toyota. Is there something new we need to work on the later model cars?

Probably. Ford switched to CAN protocol for the 2004 MY. Toyota (along with every other brand selling in the US) has also switched, don't know which years bu the 08 is guaranteed to be CAN.

Perhaps your old scanner can be upgraded, otherwise it will need to be replaced.

Thanks Steve, just when you think they make something that will actually last for a long time they go ahead and change things so you do have to buy more tools and toys! The American way I guess. Thanks again for the info.
