ABS light

How do you turn this light on the dash off - driving me nuts.
What does this light mean. Is there a problem with my ABS brakes?
Got the truck used - numerous problems trying to track them down!

The light means there is a fault code with the ABS system. You will need to have it scanned with a diagnostic scanner, not a code reader. When you get the code number post it here and we can help you figure out what the problem is.

There isone simple thing you can do prior to having it scanned.

Most common failure is the rear differential sensor. Just pull it out and check it with an ohmmeter. They usually fail by going open-circuit. Good sensors usually read around 1.0-1.5 kOhms. Replace if open or shorted.

Sorry, I do not have a diagnostic scanner - what do you recommend?
Do you have pics of where this sensor is?
I also have a service engine soon light -

1999 F150 XLT Same problem

I just bought this truck on 9/7/07 and have the same problem with the ABS light.
I pulled off the connector harness of the differential sensor and checked the it with an ohm meter, it is open.

The sensor is located on the differential housing top side facing the drive shaft.
Hope this helps,

For future reference, pretty much ANY lights on your instrument panel indicate a problem.

When your ABS light is illuminated, it indicates there is a problem with the ABS system (most likely a sensor, as previously stated), and is currently inoperable -- meaning if you encounter an obstacle and slam on the brakes, you will skid... very far. If this idea makes you uncomfortable, I'd suggest you get your ABS system fixed ASAP.

Top center of rear diff. on my f-350, its probably about the same place! Just check for an "Open"! If its "Open" its bad or if the resistance is too high, I believe someone said 1 Kohm! About $30 @ Ford and no one else sales them!

ABS Light

Yes mine was located in the same place.
O'Rilley sells them for about $20.
Not too bad to change.
Thanx for the reply.:) :)

ABS Light Reset

After changing the sensor I found that the code does not clear automatic.
They have to be cleared from the code reader itself.
I found a place that will do it for $20 which is alot cheaper than buying an ABS diognostic scanner from the Snap On man, $3000.

I also had the service engine light on.
Took it to Advance Auto to have them read the codes. They said it was an EGR valve, the code read insufficiant egr flow.
By reading these forums you all post I came to the conclusion that it was probably the DPFE sensor (valve). I changed it and that has cured the problem.

Thank you all for these forums.
