DIY'd both sides
Similar to the OP, both power door lock actuators on my 2000 F-150 Lariat 4x4 took a dive about 1 month apart....first the passenger side, then the driver side. At first they were mushy, then went completely flat....just a wimper of a click. It's obvious that the actuators fry on a regular basis because every Ford dealer in my area had them on the shelf. Not wanting to get stuck with paying $240 to $360 in labor alone, I rolled into the parts department and bought the actuators for about $160 a pair OTD. After 2 or 3 hours of DIY time, I once again had working power door locks. I found the removal and installation process relatively simple with the right tools, patience and marginal amounts of critical thought.
The one thing that I found absolutely comical about the whole process, was the fact that one of the dealerships told me that I'd have to buy the latch, actuator, and pig-tail to complete the installation. Needles to say, with that kind of advice I went elsewhere to buy the parts.

Well thanks to the forum for all of the info on power locks. I fixed mine on my expy yesterday.
Whenever I tried to unlock my doors they would just keep running and cycling and never actually unlock the doors. Eventually they would just stop but some thing must have stuck and drained my battery dead while I was out of town. I replaced the driver side actuator and replaced the battery and I still had the problem. I replaced the passenger side actuator and cleaned up my ground connections from my battery. That did it.
Now they work and they are fast.

Locks not working.
Bringing this back from the dead. I have a 2001 LARIAT supercrew. The locks have been a little unpredictable using the key fob for the last month or so but I thought it was the battery in my key fob going dead. Now the locks do not work at all. Even from inside the truck using the door switches. I just checked the fuse for the locks and it seems fine. I did notice after putting the fuse in and out that I am now getting a light clicking sound from under the dash when I use the door lock switch. It only lasts for about 3 or 4 tries and then stops until I pull and reinsert the fuse again. Almost as if it is resetting a relay or something? The outside combination keypad does not work either. I feared it was the dreaded GEM acting up as we have had a lot of rain lately.
