Want to add BACKUP lights ???
Want to add BACKUP lights ???
I had my windows tinted on my 02 Screw and have a difficult time seeing behind me now when backing up.
I would like to add a foglight on the back that comes on when I put truck in reverse and/or with a on/off switch on dash.
Anyone know what wires I need to hook into back there? Suggestions??
(PS-I do have the towing package so there is a trailer lights connector back there. I could use that possibly?)
Thanks in advance!!

KC makes a nice backup light kit that is easy to install. Took me 1.5 hours to get everything done in the driveway. The instructions are straightforward. The kit costs about $70 and made a world of difference when backing up. I had the same situation as you, except it's my tinted canopy door that reduced my viewing when backing up.
CCarrara -
I added 2 Hella clear fogs under my rear bumper after I added a Bed Cap and couldn't see out the rear. I wired them into the cab and switched them. I tow also and find it better to be able to control the lights in lieu of typing them into the back-up lights.

Tray, I installed the KC backup light kit about two years ago with an additional switch in the cab. The aux backup lights come on when in reverse, AND can be turned on any time, even if the truck is not running. (see pictures) I used a switch that lights up when on to help avoid leaving them on accidentally.
The relay is mounted in the engine compartment near the 12V regulator. A line from the stock back-up lights, and the cab switch are both connected to the relay switch terminal. Each switch line is fused at 3A. The lights are fused at 15A.
Any questions just email me.

Thanks guys. I've decided to go with both (a switch in the cab and directly connected to the backup lights.
Where do I connect to the backup lights lead? What color...?
I'm also going to add a "buzzer" to the system so ONLY when I'm in reverse, the buzzer comes on.

I used a "T" connector and tapped into the backup light cicuit at the driver side tail light. Just drop the tailgate, remove the screw holding the tail light in and then pull the tail light out. It has two retaining clips as well, so you may have to wiggle it a little to get it to come out. I cannot remember which wire going into the backup light was the hot wire, I just turned the ignition to "On" and used a multimeter to find the hot wire. There is plenty of room to run the the wire from the new backup lights along side the factory wiring harness.
Where can one tap into the circuit for a switch? I want to put a switch in like CCarrara that has 3 positions for the aux lights -- on, off, on with reverse. I'd like to not have to run wires all over the place to do it. Anyone got an idea?
Wombat,
I don't think it is possible to do what you wish, without running the wires. The only thing you may be able to find a way to save (a tiny bit...) is by getting/finding the backup light circuit somewhwere in the cab, so you don't have to run an extra wire from tail backup light, to cab switch, and then back to the new aux backup lights.
But, after looking under the truck, it's going to be REALLY easy to run the wires, LOTS of room and as others have mentioned, you can just follow the harness which is already there.
Good luck!!
I just can't find a "beeper/buzzer" anywhere??

Found a backup alarm, just replaces the bulb, it's a halogen bulb with built in beeper. VERY cool....

Well,
Installed my new backup lights and love em. BUT, havign one problem I can't figure out...
I took the hot lead off the trucks backup light, and ran it to my new backup lights relay, I connected it to the switch terminal on the relay. BUT, I also added a switch in the cab to allow turning on the new backup lights independantly of the truck being in reverse. So I conneded the hot lead from the new switch, ALSO to the switch terminal on the relay (So there are two wires connected to the switch terminal on the relay, as if there were two switchs). Then, I ran a battery lead and ground lead to the relay, and laslty, ran the "Accessory On" terminal from the relay to the new lights.
So, I can flick the switch in the cab on, the new backup lights come on (and so do the trucks backup lights). Turn it off, all the backup lights go off. But, the backup lights fuse (fuse #5, 15 amp) blows when the truck is put into reverse??
Why? There is no shorts... What am I doing wrong? If I disconnet the switch in the cab, the old and new backup lights both work fine when truck is put into reverse, no fuse blown. So the problem has something to do with having "two switches" (one being the trucks actual backup lights, the other being the toggle switch in cab) connected to the relay. How do I fix this? Diferent relay? ....
Thanks in advance...

If you can read a wiring diagram (they're pretty simple somtimes), take a gander at THIS LINK. An old friend at TheDieselStop.com drew that up for me. I have not had a chance to craw under my truck and wire the lights up yet.
On Edit: Note that this requires a 3-way switch in the cab (on, off, on with factory).
