micro-tuner or chip
micro-tuner or chip
which one should i buy? i have a 2001 f-150 lifted ,35 inch tires, 4.56 gears , air intake.. i mostly want it for the speedo and miles ... the shifting would be nice ... how much more power do u get from 87 , 91, 93 gas. is it worth the extra money at the pump , also what about engine damage due to the manual says 87 gas? i have narrowed it down to superchips but now its Micro-tuner or ship?? thanks :confused
Hi FTID,
Nice screen name!
In your case, I would go with our brand new Superchips Micro Tuner for the F-150, we here at Performance Products are the first in the country to get these units, which were released about 6 months ahead of when they were scheduled! Superchips devoted additional R&D resources to that project to get it done sooner, and they are just now starting to ship.
We have submitted the new information to the Webmaster here to have our online ordering system updated a week ago with that new product, but for now, until he gets that done, to place orders for the Superchips F-150 Micro tuner you'll need to just give us a quick call at our number listed below.
This unit incorporates many new features, in addition to being able to correct for gear ratio & tire size, it will also allow you to scan for your own error codes, you no longer have to go to a dealer or service shop to see what code is causing a check engine light! WOT upshift points are user-adjustable as well, allowing you to tialor those shift points for best performance with your specific mechanical configuration & modifications.
The other option is to do that in the Superchip module, we can correct for those things (gears & tires) in the 99 & newer F-150's in the Superchip module, but by the time you paid for that custom programming fee the new Micro Tuner would actually be cheaper!
The only time you would not use the Micro Tuner is if you need custom engine tuning for modifications like MAF's, fuel injectors, superchargers, etc., for that you will still need to use the Superchips module. Otherwise use the Micro Tuner.
You will have to use premium gas all the time with the Micro Tuner, just like with any performance chip, that is how the additional power is amde, by retuning the engine specifically for the use of premium gas.
If you want the ability to use 87 octane gas sometimes, then you'd want to go with our 2-program Superchip Flip Chip. We set that up with our normal performance program for premium gas on Side 2, and then another program for use with 87 octane gas on Side 1, with a simple toggle switch to flip to change programs. You get the full power gain only when using the premium gas performance program, on 87 octane you'll gain about 5 more peak horsepower to maybe 8 more hp at the most, compared to easily 20+ horsepower for any of the V-8's on the premium gas program. Even the 87 octane program in the Flip Chip will still have all the various delays & retards removed, so the vehicle will be noticeably more responsive, and then when you want maximum power you fill it up with premium gas & flip the switch. The Flip Chip's price also includes the cost of doing things like correcting for gear ratios, tire sizes, etc.
If it were me, I'd opt for the Micro Tuner because it does not cost any more than at most, $100 per 10,000 miles driven to operate your vehicle on premium gas all the time with the Superchip tuning compared to what you'll spend for gas using 87 octane on the factory program. So unless you know that later on you are going to be donig something like a superhcarger, or modifications that require custom engine tuning to compensate for, or you really need to have 87 octane capability, I'd go Micro Tuner.
Give us a call to go over this in more detail, I know this can be confusing and there are a number of things to be considered, so feel free to give us a shout to go over this thoroughly, or if you'd like to to get the new Superchips Micro Tuner on it's way for your F-150, etc.
