Question SuperChips Questions

Hello,

I am looking to put a chip in my truck. From what i have read it seems like SuperChips Flip chip is the way to go. So.. the question is what do I need to know before I order one of these?

The really only modifications I have done.. i purchased and installed an Intake kit.. and I installed a 40 series flowmaster. That is about all i have done so far to the motor. Does this require some kind of modifications done to the chip after I order it.. I am kinda new to the whole "new" kind of truck.. My dad has a 92 GMC 454 and we just put a hypertech chip in and that was that.. we added a bunch of other stuff a few months later.. and never had a problem. I am looking to put headers on in the future.. once i Get it back in CA and try to pass smog. Just curious..

Please help

Scott

Hi Scott,

The Superchip will be just fine with your current intake & exhaust changes, so you do not need custom programming/tuning for those.

The kinds of things that do require custom programming/tuning in your truck would generally be things like changing the MAF (mass airflow meter), different injector size, headers, installing a supercharger, ported cylinder heads, etc.

Things like intake kits (Air Force One, etc.), cat-back exhaust systems, mufflers, electric fans & underdrive pulleys do not require any custom programming/tuning in these F-150's.

The Superchip is 50-state emissions certified, so you will not have any trouble with it adhering to California's emission standards, it is CARB-certified and comes with that paperwork.

If you make other modifications later on that would require custom tuning, you can always send your Superchip back in and have a new custom program done for whatever modifications you make, the custom programming costs depend on just what kind of modifications you do & how much work that entails.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, just give us a quick call at our number listed below.

Hi Scott,

My apologies, I must have missed your post, as I just saw you didn't have an answer yet.

Yes, IMP4 is your correct computer code, excellent! That is for a 1997 4.6 automatic F-150.

As far as which Superchip to get, you can literally use either one, so you do not have to spend the additional money to get the Flip Chip if you don't need it.

The standard single program Superchip is what most people use, it has our full performance program in it that requires premium gas, which you can use for anything from daily driving to towing to running at the drag strip.

The Superchip Flip Chip is a 2-program type of Superchip that is generally used by those who want to have dual octane capability (one program for 87 octane & the other our normal performance program for premium), or for those who have significant modifications, or for anyone who has a need for 2 different programs for whatever reason. If you do not need custom programming, and have no need for 2 different programs, you do not need this unit.

The single program Superchip is what most people are using, so unless you have significant modifications or want to be able to use 87 octane gas, just go with the standard single program Superchip.

If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, give us a call & we'll be happy to cover all fo this with you!
