whats a good chip?
I want to upgrade my truck, and one way that i want to upgrade is by a performance chip. I want a significant upgrade in horsepower buti dont wanna have to spend my entire wallet and my left arm.
My truck is a stock 1999 f150 supercab flareside with an auto 4.6L v8... only performance mod on it is a K&N filtercharger
Any suggestions?

Hi BO,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
What constitutes a "significant" upgrade in horsepower varies from one individual to the next, for some of us we think that means a supercharger, for others they mean the Superchip.
The Superchip is hands down the best performance chip, as it's the only one that tunes each vehicle individually, tunes for maximum HP & torque *all* the time at any throttle position or rpm, and is still 50-state emissions certified. No other chipmaker offers all of that.
In terms of what the Superchip is going to do for you, look at it in round numbers as basically about a 10%-12% power-gainer. The maximum potential gains on your 4.6 are 26 hp & 40 lbs./ft. of torque. In terms of how the vehicle will actually *feel* from installing the Superchip, the vehicle will feel like you picked up about 10%-12% more motor under the hood, is about the most accurate way to express how the vehicle will actually feel, power-wise, from installing the Superchip.
It will also firm up the shift characteristics and remove shift delays, both on upshift as well as those aggravating downshift delays (which helps greatly on a 2-lane road when passing), as well as remove the top speed limiter.
Optimizing the powertrain programming with the Superchip is the single most cost-effective modification, in terms of performance improvement for dollars spent.
Your current change of the K&N air filter (I'm assuming that is what you mean by "filtercharger", that you do not have the complete K&N FIPK kit) gets you about a 4 to maybe 5 horsepower gain on the 4.6 F-150, so it does help.
In terms of looking at the basic order of "bang for the buck" modifications......................
Once you have the Superchip installed, then installing a good intake kit like the Air Force One is tthe next most cost-effective change, and then after that, a good cat-back exhaust (here we recommend Magnaflow, highest gains & best torque results) would rank next.
From there you can do all kinds of things, like underdrive pulleys, convert to electric cooling fans, headers, MAF's TB's, even supercharging, etc. You can literally go just as far as you want to take the performance of that truck.
If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call & we'll be happy to go over all of this with you in more detail.
We can also offer package deals & combos for those who want to do more than 1 modification at a time, or whatever works best for your particular situation & needs.
Good luck with your truck!
