do I need a custom program superchip?

Or will a standard burn do for what I need.

I am basicly doing a free flowing cat back and a K&N filter/airbox mod, will the standard burn for my computer be good for this, or do I need custom burning for mods this minor?

Oh is there also a list of what all the standard burn will change/adjust for you somewhare?

thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

On these late-model F-150's, you do not need custom tuning for things like an intake kit (like the Air Force One, etc.) as long as it is not a true "ram air" design, or for a cat-back exhaust system.

The kinds of things that do require custom programming/tuning in these vehicles are generally things like different MAF's (mass airflow meters), injector size changes, headers, and of course obvious things like superchargers, ported cylinder heads, camshaft changes, gear ratio and/or tire size changes in the 1999 & newer models, etc. There are minor things too, like if you have say, a true dual exhaust with an H-pipe or X-pipe, then you can benefit from from custom tuning to add a bit of fuel to compensate for the additional scavenging, though it's not mandatory, you can benefit from it. Or, a breather cap in the cam cover to vent crankcase pressure, as is used in supercharging many times, will also require custom tuning.

Things like an intake kit & a cat-back exhaust, underdrive pulleys, larger fuel pump & electric cooling fans do not require custom tuning.

There isn't any formal published list of these things, as that varies from one type of vehicle to the next, as well as the exact part design in some cases, like a true ram air intake, which would require custom tuning in any vehicle due to MAF voltage signal being thrown off. What we're talking about here is for the 1997 & newer F-150 platform specifically, though this is also true with many other vehicles as well, here we're only talking about the F-150.

I hope this info helps, & please give us a call if you would like to go over any of this in more detail, etc.

thanks Mike,

I guess I should have mentioned it was a 1998 4.6l f150 4x4, I gues by a list of what the chip does I was trying to get at does it firm up the shift and change the rev limiter and such on a standard burn.

Hi Steve,

OK, sure, now I understand exactly what info you're looking...............

Yes, we retune the engine as well as get rid of the soft-shift strategy, remove shift delays, remove transitional retards, top speed limiter, optimize WOT upshift points in the automatics & slightly raise the rev limiter (the rev limiter is a completely separate function from the top speed limiter, which we remove) etc., all of that is standard in our performance programs, so you don't need to have any additional custom programming done just to get those kinds of benefits in the Superchip for your F-150.
