chip really worth getting?

is the superchip really worth getting with gas prices being so high, and staying that way! 93 unleaded is like $1.60 at best. ouch!

I might get clubed over the head.....

First : I don't have a chip in mine, just get that out straight away.

I don't go to the track, if I did I woudl have gotten a L.
I think that street racing is not a wise idea (nobody hit me, this is just my take only..do what you want ).

I got a few mods on that give it all that I need on the street, for some perf gain for on ramp use and if I keep the vac at 10 or greater then I get pretty good mph ( 13.5 to 14 sitting in traffic ), and exhst for a sound that I like.

The selection had nothing to do with the price of gas, but more so a why do I need to go that far.

If I did the above items then gas pricing would not be my concern.

i do see your point, and well taken. the reason why gas prices are my concern is that i am a college student and we all know that all college kids are broke. so when i get back to school, the last thing i want to be spending my beer money on is high priced gasoline. ya heard?

All that stuff done on your truck and you are worried about an extra U$4 a week in gas money?

The extra 1 to 1.5 MPG that I received helped to offset the cost of the chip over the life of the truck. I also do not burn 93 all of the time - I can use 89 without any problems. When I do use the 89 octane I can feel the seat of the pants difference over the 93 and I do see a 1/2 mpg drop in the gas milage.

Hello All,

Tsquared makes a good point in his post about the mpg gains from the Superchip, as many of us do indeed see mpg gains.

The bottom line on the increase in fuel costs to operate the Superchip on premium gas all the time is, the Superchip will only cost, at most, about $100 more for gas per each 10,000 miles driven, and that's almost nothing, basically. For most people, not even $4 a week, more like $2-$3 a week or less in many cases. This assumes a 20 cent per gallon cost delta between regular and premium, and a 50-50 mix of city & highway driving. People who have not had a Superchip are usually under the impression that they're going to be spending a lot more money for gas, and that's a perfectly natural assumption to make, we see that all the time. That's not the case in reality however; virtually anyone who can afford to own a vehicle and buy gas for their vehicle can afford to use the Superchip.

While we're on the topic of using premium gas, the Superchip *cannot* be safely used with anything less than a good quality 91 or higher octane premium gasoline, so don't anyone get any ideas about trying that, please. Just because somebody didn't hear obvious detonation doesn't mean detonation isn't occurring. There are inaudible forms of detonation and situations in which detonation cannot always be heard, and we've seen engine damage from it in these modular motors when ignored or not noticed. Anytime premium gas is not going to be used, the Superchip needs to be removed, unless it's our dual octane Flip Chip setup.

Bennett399, of course this is all very easy for us to to say since we market that product, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to read the threads in this section to quickly see that people love the Superchip and most consider it the single best bang for the buck modification they've done. That doesn't mean it's going to feel like a supercharger of course, The Superchip is simply the most performance improvement for the least cost. I.E., bang for the buck.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, or perhaps take a look at other types of modifications to improve performance further without changing fuels, etc., please feel free to give us a call bennett399, & we'll be happy to go over all of this with you in detail.

Best of luck in school and with that truck, looks like you've got a very nice ride there from what's in your signature. (Hi Raoul)

hey Mike, thank you for the all the information. and you are right about it not taking a rocket scientist to read all the posts about the chip. i have been reading posts on this board for two years now and have always pondered this darn little thing.

knowing me i will get one, i am 100% positive of that. now that i fully understand that the cost of gas won't really affect me, the only thing holding me back from calling ya'll up and ordering a chip is the fact that my engine has picked up a case of rough idle and idle surge within the last few months. so i have been working on getting to the root of that problem and once that is done you will be hearing from me for sure buddy!

thank you again and talk to you soon, hopefully haha!

Hi Bennett399,

Ahh, so you've been here for a good while, so then you already know all of that.

Hopefully your idle issues won't be a big problem, but just a simple maintenance issue instead, like needing to replace the fuel filter or cleaning the MAF, etc. Anytime you have an idle problem, a good careful cleaning of the hot wire(s) inside your MAF (mass airflow meter/sensor) should be done (Q-tips & rubbing alcohol, gently, with the battery disconnected first!), as many times that is the culprit, especially when any low-restriction filter or intake kit is used.

Good luck!

awesome! thanks for the aditional help, I have a whole list of options that this idle problem could be. and several times people have mentioned the MAF...so that will be the first thing I check. Once I get my bills paid, I will be ordering up that chip...yes sirrrrrrrreeeee!

Bennett

An added benefit of the Superchip not mentioned in this thread is, of course, the firming up of those auto tranny shifts. While this is not an issue for me (having the third pedal), it affects most everyone else. I think most, if not all, are impressed with improved Superchip shifting.

Yeah , the only downside is the permanant ear to ear grin you get every time you drive the chipped truck!!!!!

I love my chip and the way it pulls sooooo much harder on the top end ( and no top speed limiter, which does work, I have tested it) I also love the way it chirps the tires when it shifts @ 40mph.
