Gas & Superchip, A few questions...
Gas & Superchip, A few questions...
I'm sold on getting a superchip, just waiting until the wallet can handle the loss of mass. I was wondering for those of you living in Canada, what is the best higher octane gas to put in your F150 after it's been superchipped? Also, when should you switch to the higher octane gas? Just before or just after chipping? or does it matter? Final question, does anyone out there use fuel additives after installing the superchip?
I'm sure Mike will come around to give a better answer than me, but here goes:
I have a Diablo and also live in Canada.
I suggest running high test gas at least 1 tank prior to installing your chip.
As far as fuel is concerned, I only ran Sunoco 94 for about the first 12 tanks, then I switched to Esso 92.
I don't know if this is the case in the USA, but in Canada, Sunoco 94 octane is comprised of 10% ethanol (It says so right at the gas pump)
After making a few inquiries, the info I was given was that 92 octane without ethanol , is superior to 94 octane which contains 10% ethanol/
I'm still not 100% clear on this, so if anyone here knows, please feel free to jump in and correct me if my rational is wrong.
Hope this helps.

Habibi

hmm ESSO eh? What about Shell Gold? Is that stuff crap? The reason I ask is that there is a shell close to my place where I fill up with the bronze 87 Octane. I seem to get pretty good performance with that, but I'm no expert on gas. Thanks for the tip on 1 tank of premium before the chip.
my chip will be in my hands tomorrow, would have been today but i missed the curry guy
neways i switched from 89 petrocan to 89 shell and i notice a nice difference in performance. Shell is great gas and when i get my chip installed i'm going to start putting in 91 shell right away
though i dont really know but u can most likely finish off the rest of your tank of 87 while the chip is in. Like Mike has said a thousand times, it take up to 500miles before the chip is fully intergrated with the trucks computer. So u can probably fill it with clean fuel afterwards.
Good Luck

True the computer will not completly relearn the new program right from the start, but it is tuned for premium fuel. With he adaptive learning, if you were lucky and didn't have any detonation, the computer would be "relearning" while buring a lower octane.
Shell out the extra couple bucks and get premium in it before the chip goes in is the best advise in my opinion.
Hello everyone,
Family Ride said it very well, do not attempt to run the Superchip with lower octane fuel just because it takes a few hundred miles to get 100% from the Superchip. It does tune the engine specifically for premium gas, 91-94 octane, so trying to use the Superchip on anything less than a top-quality 91 octane fuel will result in less power gain and could put you right into detonation. Always use only premium gasoline.
Now, on to the questions regarding fuel quality up in Canada........................
Most of our Canadian customers are having to use what we call "gasahol," which is the 10% ethanol mix. The ethanol portion of the fuel will have an energy content that is *much* lower than the "straight gasoline" portion (and that's a bit of a misnomer admittedly, as we're using that term straight gas just to describe gasoline with no ethanol added), on the order of 30% to as much as 50% lower energy content.
That is why we generally recommend using a 92 octane no-ethanol gas rather than a 93 or 94 octane "gasahol" mixture, as it's not just the octane number that counts, but also the actual # of BTU's per gallon, or energy content, of the fuel.
We've had some people in Canada say they're getting great results with Esso, while we recommend against the use of Exxon gas in any vehicles here in America; that is due to the low energy content of Exxon in America, and is just another example of how much fuel quality can vary based on geographic location, etc.
The best we can do as laymen to determine energy content is to use 3-5 tanks of each different brand (from the same source!) of gasoline, and track the mileage carefully. At the end of your brand sampling, the fuel showing the highest mpg content under the same basic driving conditions is generally the fuel with the highest energy content. If you decide to do this, don't just try 1 or 2 tanks of each, use a minimum of 3 tanks of each brand/source.
I hope that info helps a bit,

hehe oops i didnt mean after the 500miles i meant right after u empty the tank your on when putting the chip in
i just meant it take that long for the chip to reach its full potential thats all. Sorry for the confusion FamilyRide

Thanks for the clarification Honster, & no problem!
You gotta watch that Family Ride guy, word has it he's a bit of a stickler for facts. Sounds kinda like me and some others around here, come to think of it!
