what chip?
I was wondering what chip would be best for my application and what company would be best. I have a 01 4.2 L and the mods i have are an airaid intake and a free flowing exhaust. I was thinking maybe a couple of little mods down the line maybe but thats about it. Whats best?:confused
I got some extra cash and i too am looking at a chip or a programmer. I have upgraded to 17" tires and have a custom K&N with 3" ravin exhaust. What are the differences between the programmer and the Chip's or power modules whatever they call them. I take it a chip will not change my speedo since it is now off but I dont know. where is the best place to get a chip or programmer.
Chips?
Where do you educate yourself about chips, and performance for the F-150? Yes from the beginning, why I need a chip, what the chip will do for me, etc. I never had to mod a truck before, but everyone talks about it.
Any help.
Any help.
Hi Rob01F150, galazie64, wengerda & everyone else............
First, for those of you just now joining us, welcome to F-150 Online!
To answer your questions about which chip to go with & why...................
The Superchip is the only performance chip for these F-150's that tunes the engine for maximum horsepower and torque all the time, at *any* throttle position or rpm, tunes each vehicle according to it's own exact computer code (no "generic" programs!), and is still 50-state emissions ceritified. No other chip offers all of that, the Superchip is the only one.
Most other chips, such as Hypertech (including both their chips and the Power Programmer), Jet, etc. only tune the engine for more power in areas where there are no emissions standards that have to be met, which is only during open-loop operation, meaning only at extremely heavy to full throttle. The rest of the time, there is no power gain, such as when towing or when you are at anything less than extremely heavy to wide-open throttle. They do that because it's much cheaper to make a chip that way, but it yields a much less desirable product, with noticeably less improvement compared to the Superchip. With the Superchip, you have more power all the time, in all situations, from driving around town to highway cruising to towing to just putting around, it works all the time.
Most other chips are also made "generically," meaning there is only 1 program for all 1998 4.6 automatics, for example, and once again, that is done becuse it's a much cheaper way to bring a product to market. Superchips doesn't work like that, each Superchip is programmed to precisely match the exact software revision in each individual vehicle's powertrain computer, so that you get a program made for *your* vehicle, and not something that has been compromised to run on all similar vehicles.
Various chipmakers have various features, but in the final analysis, only the Superchip delivers it all, tuning each vehicle individually, tuning the engine for more power *all* the time at any throttle position from idle to full throttle, and is still 50-state emissions certified.
These message boards are chock-full of tons of great information about the Superchip and results their owners post, etc., if you go back thru this section to read some of those threads, you will quickly see that the vast majority of people are using the Superchip, for all the reasons noted above, it's simply the best.
For us, it's very simple; if someone else had a better product, that is what we would recommend and what we would be selling. We don't care about the name on the ouside, we care about the actual quality of the programming/tuning being done, as that is what matters, the actual results.
For those wondering how the Superchip works with other modifications, the Superchip will work just fine with things like a K&N air filter, or any of the airbox elimination kits like the Air Force One, Airaid, etc., and with any cat-back exhaust system. If you have or are thinking about more involved or major modifications, things like an aftermarket mass airflow meter, or heavy mods like supercharging, nitrous, ported heads, etc. we can also do any custom programming that may be needed as well.
If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call, we'll be happy to spend time with you answering questions, etc. so you can give it some thought before making your decisions.

Would I reccomend the Superchip?
You bet your a$$ I would!
Will the Superchip give you the edge to beat Mustang GT's and such. Well, probably not by it's self.
I think, you have come to one of the best places to find info about tuning our F150's. As you can see Mike at Performance Products spells it out pretty clear. You can buy your chip from a magazine if you want. I think you would be hard pressed to find a distributer who will give you as high a level of support as Mike.
There are may of us here using the Superchip. A majority of us are quite pleased.
If you are looking to improve an already great vehicle than you will probably be quite happy with a Superchip. If you are really not pleased with the output of your truck, you might need more than a chip to make you happy. For the reletively small amount of money I think a chip will give you the largest gain. I have spent a few bucks on my truck. It's awsome but everything has it's price.
To me when I first installed my Superchip, it felt like when you do a complete tume up on a vehicle that has been neglected for years. My truck was not neglected, ever! It ran great before the chip. It was better. Better throttle response, more power higher in the rev range. It just manuvered so much better. I could also exceede the preset speed limit, 95mph. I didn't like that I was SO limited.
Now I have supercharged my F150. The gains from the supercharger are much more noticeable. I also paid a ton more for it.
Ok, that's enough for me. I know, I sound like a commercial or something. I really believe that the Superchip works great. I don't think there is anything on the market at a similar price that will give you gains as good.
That's just me though.
Take some time to read some of the previous posts. You will see the good, the bad and the ugly. Then you can determine for yourself if a chip is what you are looking for.
Have fun!
