Exclamation Chips & Bad R&D

Last fall I traded my Superchipped 5,4 F-250 LD for a PSD Superduty. I then started researching chips for my new PSD. What I found was that EVERYONE makes a chip for the PSD. You can go as little as 50 hp up to 130 hp and maybe more. It sounded too good to be true. The only danger was higher exhaust gas temps which can fry your turbo and pistons. (Of course every chip maker claims to have the lowest EGT's as well.)

I called Mike Toyer first and asked about the 60 hp & 80 hp chips. He was straight up with his answers. Pretty much said I was totally safe pulling my 9,000 lb 5er with the 60 hp chip but that he wouldn't make any guarantees that I could pull that much weight with the 80 hp chip unless I opened up the exhaust to control the EGT's.

Then on one of the diesel websites reports started coming in from members with blown engines. ( I read about 4 different PSDs blown) The one thing they all had in common was the same chip from a well known supplier. Some of the diesel mechs on the board seemed to think it had something to do with advancing the timing too far and increasing the cylinder pressures too much. But nobody really knows. This chip even made the engine sound different at idle. At any rate, a lot of guys that had this same chip started trying to sell thiers and go with something safer.

Sooooo, I called Mike and ordered the new Superchip Micro Tuner. I have held off posting results until I had really tried it out. The easy report would simply be "WOW". Turbo lag gone. Passing power doubled. Pulling power off the scale. EGT's no problem. It really made that much of a difference.

I recently pulled the afore mentioned 5er to the Houston Livestock & Rodeo with the 60 hp program installed. I crossed the bridge in Bridge City with the cruse set at 70 mph. For those that know the town, that's a long steep bridge and I figured a pretty good test of what to expect in regards to EGT's. The truck never lost 1 mph and never kicked down out of overdrive. The EGT's went up to 1,100 degrees which is no problem. (1,250 is pretty much redline) And that's with the stock exhaust.

So what does all this boring stuff have to do with you gasser guys? Admittedly, maybe nothing. Bad chips for gassers won't cause your engine to slings rods through the block. But I look at it like this. Superchips seems to have done the R&D to put out a strong and more importantly, SAFE chip for the diesels and I would think that the R&D is also there for the gasser chips as well.

One other aspect to look at. When people started asking for tech details on the new SC Tuner on another website no answers were forthcoming from the vendors over there. Well, other than standard sales hipe. I had to come back here and ask Mike Toyer for the real details. And as mentioned above, he shot me straight and the tuner does just what he said it would. I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!

I know it was long but I hope it helped you guys in some way.

Mark

It's always reassuring when some one shows examples of what makes Superchips the best. The saying goes "time will tell". Well Superchips have been around for some time. It's a proven product.

Hi Conocoan,

My first comment after reading your post is a similar, "WOW!"

Great post, & I only hope we'll continue to live up to those accolades, that's very kind of you.

You're point is absolutely right, many people make chips, but when you get down to the nitty-gritty, it's the R&D & core competency that counts, and you can't do better than Superchips in those areas.

So glad to hear you're enjoying your Micro Tuner in that PSD, & we obviously can't thank you enough for your kind words. Someone will swear we're paying you.
