Tired of the pinging!!
Dont get me wrong I like what the superchip does for our trucks, but all the pinging drives me nuts. I live in Az. and I know the gas isnt good believe me ive tried them all. (92 and higher, different brands). I even thought getting 4.10's put in would help, but no luck. Ive called superchip twice to see if there is something they can do. They seem concerned, take my information and my problem, and say they will talk to the engineers about it and call me back. Both times no reply. I currently have the chip out and miss it very much, but at least when people ride with me i dont have to explain the noise, BTW ive had the chip for two years.
I'm with FamilyRide on this one. Something deffinitly dosen't sound right.
You only get the pinging with the Superchip in?
How many miles have you got?
If you are getting up there in the miles, maybe there is a maintainence issue. Have you had any dealings with a Ford service dept? Do you have any warranty left?
I'm not an expert on chips, far from it, but I can't imagine that there would be anything that the chip could do to cause this. Unless an un-professional got a hold of it and messed something up, or you got some really bad gas (ha, that sounds kinda funny!
).
I don't say all this to make you think I know what I'm talking about. I don't
. I would like to know if this could be a problem for me, and know how to avoid it.
There is an answer. It will be here soon enough.

Have you tried an octane booster additive?
Had a friend drive his F150 with some kind of chip upgrade to AK from OR last summer. He said it ran fine thru BC but got pinging about the time he got into AK. All you can find around here is "advertised" to be 90.
He used some octane booster from an autopart store and managed to figure out how much to add to get rid of the pinging while he was here. (and got right back to trying to talk me into buying a chip for my truck).
Do you have to use oxygenated fuel in Phoenix? When we had to use it here, I had to bump up to 88.5 from 87 to get rid of pinging.

Hi Shooter,
Sorry that you're having a problem, that's very rare indeed, and there's going to be a cure for this.
Something is obviously wrong here, as the Superchip can be run on any decent quality premium gasoline of 91 thru 94 octane without causing any detonation. As we can all see, with all the many people here using them, we see no patterns of this kind of complaint or posts here on the boards, other than the occasional issue of poor fuel quality. And even that is easily solved in most cases by using the brands we suggest.
We have many, many customers in that same area of the country, all over AZ, and none of them is having any problem with detonation when using good quality premium gas, just to let you know.
What you need to do is to contact whoever you purchased your Superchip from, whether that is us here at Performance, or directly from Superchips, or whomever, as that is who is responsible for your Tech Support, and go over this situation in detail, as there is *always* a cure for a problem of detonation.
This could also be a problem with the IAT (inlet air temperature) sensor, as you mention that you have some kind of airbox modification. If that IAT isn't relocated correctly, that alone could easily cause detonation with the Superchip installed, just for an example.
The reality is that this can be caused by any number of things, and the fuels in that state, while not quite as good as in some other areas as you correctly pointed out, are in fact supporting everything from bone-stock to Superchip-only to much more heavily modified vehicles with the Superchip, just to let you know, so something is definitely not right here.
If you feel you're not getting anywhere with whoever you are talking to (and I'd love to know the names of anyone you've spoken to at Superchips about this, as I know them all personally and can take this up with any of them), you can give us a call and we'll go over this with you to see where you got it, and just what has actually been done, by who, etc. What you're saying is not in any way normal, and there's going to be an answer here so you can get back to enjoying your Superchip, and not have any detonation.
If you need to reach us, our contact info is just below!

I had a Hypertech chip before the Superchip, and it made the truck ping badly. The main reason I believe was because it was the wrong code. The place where I bought it didn't have a clue(Autozone), and I wasn't about to wait a few weeks to get HT to reburn it. I returned it quickly, before they realized their mistake

You may have the wrong code.
