jimbo74 needs a tuner

Ok, so I am thinking about picking up a Tuner from 5star

looking at the SCT 7015 X4

what tunes should I get programmed into this thing? Honestly, I really want longevity of the truck. I will occasionally have a motorcycle, or camping gear in it, and may be used it to haul stuff occasionally. This truck really just sits and is a secondary vehicle. It's my weekend truck.... I may add a CAI and muffler to it at some point.

What does everyone think?

here are my specs:

2001 F-150 Supercab 4x4 XLT, 5.4L Triton V8, 174k miles, automatic. Has a lift and no muffler. 315/75/16s on it.

door code says I have a 3.55 gear ratio with a limited slip ---- I did jack my truck up, and spun the driveshaft. My driveshaft made ~4.5 turns per 1 tire rotation!!!!! Does this mean I have 4.56 gears? I will confirm when I do a drain and fill of the front and rear ends

My speedometer does currently read 110+ mph, when the truck is only going 90 mph via gps

all the threads I am finding are several years old

If the engine is stock, the most bang for the buck is a used Superchips tuner off ebay for $100 or less. If you modify the engine, it will need a custom tune. I loaded a Superchips 1715 87 octane tune in my 2002 5.4 and got a big boost in hp and a little better fuel economy. Just make sure it comes with the cord and is not vin locked. Ask the seller if they don't say so in their ad.

From what I have read, buying used isn't the best option. I have heard the tuners don't like writing tunes for a product not purchased from them. Also, are you saying a sct 7015 is $100 on ebay? I have seen some in the $200+ realm, but nothing $100. I do need to fix my speedometer with it.

The Superchips 1715 is an old tuner that is not supported by Superchips any more. It only applies to 96 thru 2003 models.

Here is one for $125 that claims to be not vin locked.

You pays your money and you makes your choice.

looks like I am going to be alone on this....

For as popular as the F-150 is, I am surprised this site is so dead

Discuss that with the tuning shop you select.

jimbo74,

I have a '13 f150 with the 5.0 and got my tunes from mpt. I got 5 tunes 87 performance, eco, and tow, all with trans tuning, i also got an 87 performance w/no trans tuning, and a 93 performance tune. My truck is a daily driver so I run the 87 performance w/trans tuning 95 percent of the time i ran the 93 performance tune for 1 tank to test it out and make sure it was good to go but due to gas prices i dont run it. I used the eco tune on my way to Florida and averaged 19 mpg. running the 87 performance tune daily city driving with tons of stop and go i am getting 15 to 16 mpg up from 12 to 14 mpg. use this as an idea of what to get MPT doesnt tune for the 2001 anymore. Since your truck is a secondary vehicle you may not want to get 5 tunes. maybe performance tow and eco all 87 just a guess

So.... just sent a message to 5Star

Think I am going to get an X4 from them

maybe an 87 performance, 87 tow

looks like I have a 2v motor?

I didn't see anything about changing the trans settings? does 5Star do that? do I need it? I did notice that their tunes are different if you have an automatic or a manual, maybe that is the trans tune

Yes, you have a 2V. The 4R70W is controlled by the same PCM as the engine.

5 Star responded pretty quickly to my emails today. I think I might be ordering an X4 this weekend.....
