Please help our gas milliage
my son has a 2007 a fx2 sport truck , he's had it since he turned 16 , he loves his truck. He just started college and it's over 100+ miles to and from . My question is, Is there any kind of chip or something we can do for his truck to get better gas millage? Its taking over $100 in gas a week . I'm a single mom and I can't afford the gas but he has to stay in school , he's doing great . SOMEONE HELP PLEASE

Whatever you would spend on anything to MAYBE get better mileage would have a long payback time. The best thing to do is make sure it's maintained properly, and most important, drive it conservatively!

what kind of mpg is he currently getting? if you dont know that...you should.
what is the truck, 4.6 or 5.4 engine, rear end, does it have oversized tires? does he drive fast or the speed limit. tell him you have $70 a week for him to buy gas, that other $30 is up to him. He can cut one yard a week and make the difference. I would consider college priority #1, sell the truck and get car that gets 25 to 30 mpg. if he is like my 20 year old, he takes off fast, stops fast and goes 5 to 10 over on the freeway. i can get in my sons truck that averages 11 mpg and i can get 15 no problem. |
Pump the tires to 40psig and drive easy. A tuner will increase the fuel mileage a tiny bit but it would take a long time to pay back. I rented a 2.0L 2013 Ford Focus while on vacation a couple years ago and that thing was getting close to 40 mpg. An economy car is the best solution.

Unfortunately I don't believe that a tuner will make a big enough difference in fuel mileage to make it worth while for that much driving. I would suggest that you trade the F-150 for a small car that gets around 30 MPG or better.
