How long does it take to program computer with tuner?

I got a SCT X3 with custom tunes from VMP, and I loaded it on my truck and started the download. To my surprise, it took a good hour to finish. I was under the impression these things only take 5mins to update your computer.

I'm really, really worried about turning on my truck and driving it, now. Could I have gotten the wrong tune? Would it have error'd if I did?

If anyone else has experience with these, your input would be greatly appreciated.

If it was an 09+ then that's normal as you are storing the stock calibrations, then flashing BOTH the PCM AND the TCM.

Hey - I forgot to mention - once you've got custom tuning installed, switching between custom tunes ( if you have more than one on the device) is far quicker, as the stock tunes for the PCM/TCM don't need to be stored again - they are already resident in the handheld - and you don;t need to go back to stock to switch between custom tunes.

Oh, man... I drove it about 10 miles and it was horrid... Theres a really loud rattling/grinding noise coming from the engine every time I give it gas.

Anyone else have this issue? I got the tuner to compensate for a CAI (among other reasons) and I certainly wasnt expecting this... What could it be?

Return it to stock immediately and contact VMP.

Are you sure you didn't load a high octane tune with low octane in the tank?

What octane fuel?

I'd try the whole reflash process again. ENSURE you have a freshly charged healthy battery with NO loads running.

If it does the same thing, return to stock (even if it means putting back the OEM intake) and Call VMP, ASAP.

On rare occasions the flash can be corrupt.

I'm using 87 octane and I tuned it with the 87 performance program.

I'll give the flash another try and see what happens.

Ugh, this is the worst...

So, I re-tried the Performance tune, and it was doing the same thing. I didn't mention this in my other post, but both times, now, the first start after the tune was complete took WAY too long. A good 5+ second of cranking. After the initial start after the tune, things were fine.

I tried the eco tune just to see if it might even things out a bit, but it's doing the same thing. I want to say it's pre-ignition, or "dieseling" as my dad calls it, but it's worse than I've ever heard on a vehicle before, and that's saying a lot considering I've barely got 17k miles on my truck.

I guess my tunes are trash, which is weird because I've seen a lot of good things about VMP on here. I saw some recent complaints, though, and I might be adding to them very soon if this doesn't get fixed.

I'll be complaining to VMP, tomorrow, but if anyone has any advice or insight (or even just some consoling words) they'd like to give in the interim, I'd very much like to hear what you've got to say.

As always, thanks for the help, guys.

^What he said. Don't throw in the towel yet. I always have every light flashing on the dash, fans running, ect. while programming. It is a little wierd at first when you have to crank it a little more than you are used to. It is always like that. If you want further help, you can always get a hold of SCT online support, although I woulds first try VMP. When I got my 93 performance / tow tune, I had a problem with loading it into my tuner, and I have been doing this for years. SCT has changed the way you download into your tuning device. It is much simpler now. Turns out the tunes were already there! Talk abouty feeling like an idiot. Between SCT & VMP you have an excellent back up team.

Grab a few cases of beer, maybe he'll get to it in September. I'm lucky my VMP tune at least worked, it just didn't work very well and I had 5star tunes already. Very interested to see if Justin fixes your tunes before mine because I've been waiting over a month now!

As many have mentioned on here before if you had a pre-existing problem with your truck then tuning may just magnify the problem, however your truck is almost new so that's probably not it but you never know. If it runs smooth when in stock trim then I'd be inclined to blame the tunes.

Good luck and update the thread with your findings!

I run 5Star tunes as well. I understand fully the OP's frustration with something new to him. Especially when it is on the weekend and you have no where else to turn other than a forum for support. You have in your hand something you really want, and it will not work and you absolutely do not know what in the world to do. I am not going to flame VMP's tunes beecause I simply do not know their track record. It seems that they have a good one. Like MGD said. Return it to stock if all else fails. Then pull the CAI put your stock intake on. Reflash the ECM & TCM to the 87 perf / tow. If it fails again, like MGD said above, you may have a corrupt file. It happens sorry. It has happened to me. This is exactly how I found out about another tuner platform's problems and running a CAI on a truck. Turned out not to be anything other than the CAI. I am not going to start beating that horse.

Yep, you nailed my situation right on the head. I'm taking the CAI out this evening - it's just too hot to do anything right now (109F).

This is the second time I've swapped this damn CAI out in the last two weeks... First, I was losing a bit of mileage as I was presumably running a little lean, so I pulled it out and ordered the tunes to try and salvage the purchase. The tuner showed up, reinstalled the CAI, tuned the ecm, and now I've having much bigger problems...

I'm going remain optimistic and hope Justin at VMP does follow through in a timely fashion on this. A lot of people seem to think pretty highly of him, and I can only hope he's not too busy to help out.
