Is it worth it?
Is it worth it?
Hey guys, I'm new to the tuner scene. Right now I have a jeep, and I'm looking to sell it to get a F250 5.4 with the ZF5. I'm wondering if it is worth spending the money on one of these Edge tuners. Does it really add power and/or increase mpg? I'd be using the truck to go to school and stuff, so any addition to mpg is a good thing. So...is it really worth it? (Real life numbers are always accepted and welcomed!!

P.S. I'd be using my truck like it was made to be used too...hauling and towing my boat and whatever else.

It will add significant power and much better shifting, however, any mpg are hit and miss. I would not buy a tuner expecting to get better mpg. Most stay about the same.

Some do, some don't. All we're saying is don't buy a tuner and custom tunes for that specific reason. You'll likely be pissed off.
However, driveability, reduction of DBW lag, better shifting, etc. With a good tuner and custom tunes, those are guaranteed.

^ Completely true. The man with the scatter cannon speaks truth!
Don't buy it if getting better gas mileage is even half of the reason for getting a tuner/programmer. All of the advantages shotgunz listed are absolutely true and were more than enough reason for me to purchase a programmer.
After installing a programmer or tuner, I think individual results in fuel economy changes have much to do with changes in driving styles. Most, including myself, want to "test" the new gadget. I sure did, and at first, that definitely didn't help with fuel economy. The more I got used to it and started driving more "normal", I saw some decent gains. I didn't expect them, really....but it was a good bonus.
But that's just me. Don't go saying I said anybody who gets a tuner/programmer will get 2-3 more mpg because I didn't...and you won't.

Same as Dewser...the 91 octane tune is fantastic, I was stomping on the pedal everywhere I drove, was a blast! I did that for almost 2 weeks, didn't care about fuel economy. I have driven around the city on some short jaunts and driven sensibly and attained some fantastic fuel economy. But that usually doesn't last long :-)

As king ad it eliminates the trait of superduties staying in closed loop mode,I had a troyer tuned xcal 2 installed on my 04 superduty e series van in 04,400,000 miles ago, made more of a difference jb my van as opposed to my f 150 FYI

Thanks for the info guys! I wouldn't be buying one to get improved fuel economy...but it would be a bonus. I would be looking at getting one to really wake up the 5.4 and in combination with an exhaust, and maybe some sort of intake get some more power out of it...like I said, I'd want to tow and haul and extra power is good for that! Thanks again for the info!
You already have one of the best intakes you can put on these....your stock one! Just do the GOTTS mod on it and save your $!!!
I've been reading about that. That would certainly be easy and cheap enough to do. I just didn't realize that the stock intake was that good! That's good to know! What kind of hp and torque gains would y'all estimate for just doing the GOTTS mod, exhaust, and tuner?
