What programmer to get?

I have a stock 05' screw with the 5.4l and a dwv intake change but nothing else. I'm wondering what would be the easiest programmer to use that will give me the best MPG. I don't care much for power since I don't really pull anything but I drive 35 min to work each way. Can anyone give me some advise that wont make me run to lean, since I know the 04-05's have issues doing that. I plan on dropping in a k & N air filter and some catback magnaflow exhaust. eventually. Any help or ideas are appreciated.

Nothing is going to improve your mileage enough to justify the cost of a programmer.

The programmer itself with a custom tune geared towards mileage will justify the cost. Say you drive 70 miles/day and a total of 18,200 miles/yr. At 15 miles/gallon that's 1214 gallons/yr. With a 1 mpg increase to 16 mpg it equates to 1138 gallons/yr. Savings of 76 gallons. If gas is $3.25/gallon the savings per year is $247.

Thing is, there's no guarantee that your mileage will improve. There are just too many variables.

On another note, the K&N filter won't do anything positive for you except for the clean/reuse factor and it can have an adverse effect. The filter oil can foul the MAF, and it does not filter as well as a stock paper filter. If you want a quality reusable filter, look at the Amsoil filters. They are dry filters that you clean with a vacuum cleaner.

Thank you rllackey28 I like the break down, not to mention your truck looks sweet! So Amsoil filter would be better and improve MPG? So rllackey28 is there a programmer you would recommend for the 05'? Thank you!

A programmer combined with improved awareness with how you are driving should improve mileage. Most people on here report that they do see improved mileage and performance with their truck after a custom tuned programmer is installed. In my personal opinion I think you would see an increase in mileage if you are conscious of what your goal is. Most people that have made comment on their programmer have said they could probably get even better mileage if they were so impressed with the performance gains. Otherwise stay with stock size tires/wheels and keep them properly inflated and the truck well maintained.

so can you read????

no one said the Amsoil would yield better mileage oveer the K&N, just that the Amsoil oil free filter is a lot less hassle

only you can determine which tuning device is best for you, this STICKY is there for a reason

I'll suggest an SCT Xcal3 with tunes from VMP, fivestartuning or another reputable tuner AVOID CANNED TUNES

Air filters have absolutely no effect on gas mileage - period - unless they are dirty and clogged. Then you might lose a bit.

+1 on mileage loss. I have an '05 FX4 with 5.4L and received an Airaid cold air intake as a gift. My mileage actually decreased about .5 mpg or so. I have years experience as a vehicle test engineer so I mapped out a profile for my 60 mile daily commute as far as vehicle speed, cruise, etc. and did a 1000 mile sample before and after...and the result was the same .5 mpg loss. The main improvement I noticed is that the truck will now lug at a higher % throttle in overdrive at lower mph before downshifting which improves driveability.

Well tarajerame I actually can read, perhaps better than you. If you can understand punctuation you may have understood that I was asking a question. (see question mark at the end of the sentence, they look like ?) Thanks for the sarcasm hopefully since your a Technical Article Contributor you should have went back to school to understand proper English and what has been written. (Period)

Thanks, man. I used numbers similar to those to justify mine, . You can't guarantee mileage but mine helped me maintain my mileage with the add on of the level kit and the tires.

You might do okay at reading, but you may want to work on your own spelling, punctation, and grammar. . I'll let you figure it out.
