Edge and DTC's????
 

Hey guys - I have an 04 F150 fx4 - I have been having all sorts of issues regarding ignition coil circuit malfunctions - codes have been P0351,352,358 usually - I took my truck to a local shop for help with this issue. They changed the plugs again and my cop's - they changed the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, and cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body. They said that all the codes are gone and have not come back - they have run the truck for 2 days off and on and driven it about 20 -30 miles. They called me this afternoon and said everything was fine and I could pick it up. Then a little later they called and said that they hooked my Edge back up and set it back to level 2 where I normally run it - and within 3 minutes the codes were back. Code P0352 - any ideas guys??? I'm out ideas and not sure what to do.

Is the engine running badly? Do you have a check engine light too? Have you tried clearing the code with the Edge, and if you do, does the code come back?

If the code will not clear in the Level 2 tune, try the Level 1 transmission tune. See if it clears there. Or, try it on the stock setting.

(I'm trying to determine if somehow the tune is responsible, and I honestly don't see how it could be. And, once in a while, SOME codes seem to be set right after loading a tune but if cleared, they go away for good.)

One source I looked at said to check the wiring to the COP carefully. It could be degraded and would probably show up as a "primary fault".

Beyond this, I'm out of ideas and if the code does not happen at stock, it's time to call Edge.

At the stock setting - there are no codes for the ignition system....only the P1000 code now. I posted a longer response on PHP - thank you for your help.

You're welcome. And, as you saw on the PHP forum, the P1000 code is normal. DO try the Level 1 setting. That should eliminate the P1000 code. If the P0352 code does not return, I'd have to say it could be tune-related.

will do - I am just counting the time down until I get home from work so that I can try it and see what happens...I know I'm spoiled b/c I have had the edge on there for about 2 or 3 yrs and now driving it stock just isnt right! It feels so sluggish compared to what Ive known for so long now. :cool::lol:

And THAT really makes me think it's NOT tune related. If you've had 2-3 years of trouble-free driving it really sounds like a truck component breakdown to me.

Over time, the adaptive learning system in the truck learns to compensate for component degradation. But, a tune demands a near-perfect system to perform properly. It uses that near perfect state as a baseline for modifications. If that baseline changes, then the modification may be too strong in some area, causing DTCs. At stock, with no modification, the truck can compensate.

If the COPs are new and you have new plugs, then I really think a close inspection of the wiring to the COPs is in order. Pay close attention to any insulation damage and to the quality of the connections. I just went out and looked at my truck and I know this inspection will not be easy, but I think your problems are in the ignition system itself, not the tune.

Well I'll start by saying this - like mentioned before - the truck was running fine stock - when the programmer was reinstalled at level 2 - it started throwing codes (the same codes over and over) and it was missing and running rough. I took the edge home and plugged it in to the Fusion software and it got several updates and it was re-calibrated. That being said - I went home last night and installed the edge and set it to level 1. The edge had to relearn my stock settings and everything - then on level 1 - no issues at all. So later I moved it back to level 2 - NO ISSUES AT ALL!!!! I have been doing everything that I was doing to try and get codes or misses or something - nothing!! The truck is running like a champ....I have driven it around 60 miles so far and avg mpg is 15.5!!!! Man I think its finally back (knock on wood)!!! Thank you everyone for all your help and input.

Updating the programmer was my next suggestion but I'm glad you took upon yourself to do it and found out that fixed it.....:thumbsup:

Yeah - It feels great to have my truck back completely.....I forgot how nice it ran when everything was right on it!!
