Question need programmer.

Got a 2002 f-150 fx4 lariat with 5.4L v8. i got a k&n filter & cherry bomb to duals. i also have an "ultra gauge" that i love. i want to get a lil better gas mileage on the beast. which programmer would be the best? please back it with facts and not just opinions.
how much gas mileage could i look to expect once installing it?
can i still run my ultra gauge with the programmer?
how hard is it to tune?
thanks in advance.

FACTS: https://www.f150online.com/forums/ch...unes-read.html

MORE FACTS: These trucks vary hugely in configuration ( eg. weight), OEM calibrations ( Hundreds of different ones), etc. State of tune, maintenance, location, fuel quality, mods, ad-infinitum, all conspire to ensure that YOUR results WILL differ from others - so PLEASE understand that NO ONE HERE can give you hard numbers. Okay?

This forum is also Rife with OPINIONS - Sorry about yer luck - there IS a reason - see above,

how much gas mileage could i look to expect once installing it? Very little to NONE.

Yer also going to get very little perf gain unless you run Premium fuel AND a Premium-tuned calibration - a consequence of a non-3V design.

can i still run my ultra gauge with the programmer? SURE. Just disconnect the programmer when the calibration flash is completed.

how hard is it to tune? You do not program it - the tuner does that - you just load the tune and pehaps change some vehicle-specfic settings ( if a generic tune) - that's wha the Installation Manual is for.

thanks in advance.Yer welcome.
See siggie fer preferred tuning shops & programmers.

thanks alot for the helpful info mgdfan. i appreciate it. i really thought that it stayed hooked up to it. im only used to programmers for atvs. those stay connected & you add your mods and can program the "chip" via a "map" downloaded to it. i still have a lot to learn but this is a great start.

o ok. thanks. i was reading about "flash" programming. is that the one you have to just plug and program then take out? i think thats right. i was reading up and it said you have to get it programmed to be able to use it. how does that process work? how do they know what program to put on it?

Hi again, sir;

There are two scenarios here:

1. A 'Canned' device - where all of the supported calibrations for your truck are already included and preloaded on the programming device itself. The act of connecting it to yer truck ( again - following the directions in the relevant manual is crucial here to get the sequence correct) - allows the device to 'detect' yer PCM (truck's computer) an install the desired new tune.

2. A 'Custom' tune - where the tuning shop of choice ( again, see my sig) either preloads the tune, once constructed - or emails same and you install onto the device for subsequent loading onto yer truck. For this you would need to fill out something resembling this: http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...=226&parent=66.

This defines a true Custom tune fer yer truck much preferred).

Sir - call the folks and discuss - it's the BEST way I know to familiarize yerself with the many options available to you.

Good luck, and Cheers.
