Help me out!
Help me out!
Sorry for the noobish Q!! I have been out of the loop for a few years!! So i have been looking at a tuner for my 5.4 04, Ive looked at the Gryphon CS and the Edge Evo. The mods i have are Airraid CAI and Magflow cat back.. I have the chance to pick up a Edge Evo for 100 bucks but i dont know what im doing really.. So this is the question. Should i buy a new Gryphon cs or the evo? I want to be able to get custom tunes, dont really care about the color screen. The guy said it was "unlocked" and back to stock..
If you don't care about the color screen and you can get a working Evolution for $100, I'd say take it!
With the CAI, you will want to get custom tunes, so you'll need to send the Evo to PHP to be converted to a Gryphon. I think the conversion costs in the neighborhood of $25-30 and you will pay postage to ship it. Then, tunes are $60 each.
This is all still much cheaper than buying a CS.

The only problem I'm seeing is that the CAI on a 2004 truck has a reputation for making the engine run lean, which can lead to damage in the long term. The Level 2 tune is somewhat richer, which is why I suggested that tune.
I really would not delay sending it in too long though as long as you have the CAI installed. If you could put the intake back to stock, there'd be no problem. Ideally, you'd want to install the CAI back on when you receive your Gryphon back with its tune(s) set up for the CAI.

i don't know if it makes a difference but i have had the CAI on since 2004 with no problems.
My plan was to install the Edge, drive it for a few weeks and send it in. If your telling me there could be a problem then i will just send it in.. Thanks for your help guys..

I don't think the "lean" problem applies to ALL CAIs, so you may have one that doesn't have this behavior. Certainly having six years of happy driving implies things are relatively OK.

Don't want to beat a dead horse but i would like to clarify.. So do you think its a good idea send it in first, get the custom tunes then insall or install, drive on it a bit then send it in.. I would really like to play with the new toy if its not going to wreck my stuff!
^^ YES ^^!
And, if you've been driving around with that CAI on for 6 years, another few months won't hurt anything. The Level 2 tune if anything will be "kinder" to your engine than stock because it is richer. The Level 1 tune IS a stock engine tune, it just makes adjustments to the transmission. I'd stay away from the Level 3 tune though. I may be wrong, but I think it is leaner than stock.
