Unique Gryphon CS issue, need Hex Code

Okay, this is a pretty unique problem i think

I bought a Gryphon CS during the sale, and I got it in the mail and I am waiting on my custom tunes. The issue is that I have a V6 and while Bill assured me that he can write tunes for it, I am unable to retrive my Hex code that he will need to do so.

When I plug it in it says the VIN is not supported.

So Im sitting here and I need the custom tunes to make the Gryphon work, but I need to get the Hex to get the custom tunes.

I believe I can take it to the dealer to get them to get the Hex code, but does anyone know of a easier (read cheaper) way to do so?

I thought the hex code was also located on the PCM...printed on a white sticker.

I bet MGDfan, 88, or Jack will know this one...

Your best bet would be to contact PHP and see what they have to say.

I went out to the PHP forum to see if I could find anything for you there, but it appears that you have beat me to it. Jack has said that Bill will get back to you on how to retrieve that info. Unfortunately, if a previous owner has ever made changes to the PCM (flashed it) then you won't be able to get the code from the PCM. Does anyone know if the Haynes manual has the location of this sticker? Mine is at home right now and I won't be going there until late tonight (after a baseball game) If you have a Haynes Manual, I would check that out to see if you can locate the sticker on the PCM. Good luck and if I find any more info I'll let you know.

Yup, posted on there too, I know bill is really busy, and was trying to solve this one on my own so he has more time to work on my custom tunes!

I looked on the PCM and didnt see any codes that ended in .hex

Flashmaster, I THINK your hex code will be a 7-character alphanumeric value that's similar to mine. Mine is: RXCM5E4. Now, Bill explained this once and I'm going from memory (because I don't feel like looking for his post), and as I recall, the "RCXM" is the "family" (yours will be different). The "5" represents 2005, the model year of my truck. I don't recall the meaning of the "E", but the "4" says it's the 4th version of this particular firmware flash, so mine MAY have been flashed at the dealer's before I got it, or it might have come from the factory as version 4. Bill says there IS a later version to this firmware, so a dealer COULD want to flash it at any time, which would render my tunes useless and I'd have to pay for new ones.

If you can find a label with a 7-character code on it like the one I described, it is probably your hex code. But I have to tell you, there are two labels on my PCM that I can easily see, and neither one of them has my hex code on them. It's possible the label is on the back where I can't see it.

Regardless, I think your hex code is a moot point unless the CS will recognize your VIN. That is something you can easily get though and my guess is, Bill will need it to reprogram your unit so that it WILL recognize your VIN. Once it does that, it will be able to retrieve your hex code I think.

I've done what I can to tell him about your problem. I would advise you to try to be patient until he gets back to you.

- Jack

I am very appreciative, I was just trying to figure it out so I could have it on hand when Bill needs it. I am just crazy excited about this. I will try and wait patiently, but patience is not one of my many virtues.

I guess I just need to listen to Axl.....

I ordered a CS last week, I actually got my hex code from my OBDII scanner. I got one a while back from Advance Auto, I pluged it in and looked up information and found the vin number and my hex code listed. I sent that hex code to Bill when I ordered and I also talked with him on the phone about how I got it. You can maybe going to a parts store that offers to plug in a OBDII scanner. Think Autozone and Advance offer it for free. Worth a shot if you are looking for the hex code.

My CS is to be shipped next week with the custom tunes install. I can WAIT!!!!!

Guess its too much to ask

Autozone employees are freaking idiots

Okay, thats a pretty broad statement, but these two ladies working at autozone were pretty bad. I would think that you would have a little bit of knowledge about cars.

I went to go and see if I could get someone to read my hex code with their OBDII scanner. When walking up I saw a sign that said "We check Check Engine lights," good sign right?

I knew better than to throw out words like hex code and PCM, so I said that I needed to use the check engline light tool, and it went like this

"I need to use the check engine light tool, can you help?"
"Sure, is your check engine light on?"
"Well, no, but I need the code off my computer."
"Sir, the check engine light is on your car, not your computer." (first sign)
"Yes maam, I know, but the car's computer will give me the code, can we just go and look"

the first lady was throughly confused so instead of getting the scanner, she went and got her boss

"Can I help you?"
"Yes, I would like to borrow the tool that you use for the check engine light."
"We dont rent that out."
"Thats fine, can we just go plug it in?"
"Is your check engine light on?"
"Well, no, but I need to read the hex code from my cars computer"
"Thats against company policy, its posted on the window."
"Really, where?"
"Right there." points at a sign saying I cant dispose of batteries there
"I dont see anything like that, are you sure you cant help? It will take two seconds."
"Sir, I told you its illegal." (it went from against policy to against the law, wow)
(in my head) "Well obviously your to stupid to help me, I thought you had to know something about cars to work here, silly me."
(Actually said) "Well thank you, but I guess you cant help me."

guess ill figure out something else. I am trying to be patient, but I have still yet to hear how we are going to fix this

So PHP still hasn't contacted you or at least responded to your post, on their site, on how to retrieve your .hex?

I know right now they are in the process of moving. I'm waiting on my order (gryphon cs and cutom tune).

I just sent Corey my code today. I have a 2007 FX4. Reading through websites I found a 4 digit code that consists of 3 letters and the last is a single number digit. I have a sticker that is right on the front of my PCM.

Flash I have also read that there should be a sticker on the black box around the pass side kick panel. Maybe for some trucks, but mine was not there.

If you have a Napa, maybe try with them. The Advanced Auto's around here are hit/miss as far as employee knowledge. My local Napa's are pretty good and freindly.

Good luck

No contact yet, but I know they are really really busy. Thats the main reason I am trying to get my hex code on my own, so they have one less thing to worry about.

Your Hex was only 4 digits long? Jackandjanet said it was 7

There is a napa down the street from the autozone, guess Ill try tomorrow

I have never seen a 4 digit hex code? From what I know, it should definitely be a 7 digit letter and number combination. Im sure Bill will call or email you as soon as he sees its only 4 digits. Your best bet is too plug into the OBD to check it and give you the correct HEX. It is possible to have your PCM flashed, so the stickers are not always your best bet(unless the dealer replaces them when the PCM gets flashed). Always plug into the OBD to get the HEX.
