Question Does it have to be ford?

I tried searching and couldn't come up with anything.

I found(my neighbor) a used edge evo except its for a chevy. My question is if I plan on going to gryphon once I get it does it have to be for my specific truck originally or could any obdII evo be changed to fit my truck when changed to gryphon?

Thanks!

Hello!

That's a GREAT question sir!

My take - if Bill lobotomizes the Edge down to 'bare metal' (sorry geek-speak, lol), and loads Gryphon's O/S, firmware & tuning, then the answer would be 'yes'.

Perhaps someone could ask on yer behalf on the PHP forum (or look there yerself - you'd need to join up I think).

I don't think different the OBDII protocols would be an issue, as the above reload would provide the correct one for the (new) target platform.

Good luck!

Sorry but tuners are not one size fits all. You will need an edge for a 2003 F150.

At a certain level of granularity, they are.

Just like cellphones.

It's the layered software that is the differentiator.

I think!

And possibly the cable? Asking.

EDIT - Good call, Sir Jim!

OBDII cable itself standard pinout, but GM is either VPW or CANSF protocol. Ford is either PWM or CAN SF protocol.

If the specific device only populates the cable to the brand/protocol level, then yes it may not work.

http://www.auterraweb.com/obdiipinout.html

However, perhaps PHP has the ability to reconfigure the pinouts (just SWAG here).

This is indeed an intriuging question!

I'd love to know the final answer!

Those off-the-shelf OBD scanners work on all ( most) brands of vehicles - same cable.

Then why did they have so much trouble with the cables for the 1999-2003 units. Why were they not the same as the 2004-2008 cables?

I guess I did not read the OP's question correctly. I thought he was asking if a chevy edge tune/r would work on his ford. Although I would have not thought about the possibility of reprogramming the unit itself. Unless it is a super good deal I would think it would just be cheaper to buy a Gryphon. They are on sale now I think?

See EDIT above - that was when vehicles went to CAN SF PCM's.

Also yer normal everyday off the shelf code readers can interface with any/all of them regardless of make. So it is possible. All depends upon how it is implemented. Dang those pesky mutliple incompatible 'standards'

Quit acting like it's a 'technical' quest and admit you're just hoping he'll buy you beer with the money he's saving.

Whatever you do, make sure your buddy returns his tunes to stock before he gets rid of the truck.
