I'm also interested in an answer to this as I have the same option of an edge being given to me from a friends truck he wrote off.

And I gotta say I miss that Shiner that flows everywhere in College Station

It feels to me, that whatever you're going to save in getting the unit for a different make vehicle, you're likely going to pay in having it "converted", since this is probably a "one-time" programming job (assuming it can even be done). I think I'd pass and just get one for an f150.

If you DO get one for free, you could always sell it on ebay and use the money toward an f150 model.
