Upgrading Evolution to Gryphon

Has anyone had their Edge Evolution sent back and upgraded to a Gryphon? If so how long did it take to get back and what did it cost? I have a Banks CAI and Flowmaster super 44 SI/DO in front of the rear tire. Is it worth upgrading to the gryphon?

I did, it took exactly a month to get mine back but they are supposed to have cut the return time down significantly. I think it was worth it, especially in the shifting area.

What octane you going to run?
On a 5.4L 3V hp gains are:
87 oct up to 25hp w/o cai.
92 oct up to 35hp w/o cai.
Hp gains vary by CAI mfgr, so those numbers are not included.

I'm going to run 87 90% of the time. I don't think I'll run 93 too often but I'd like the option to do it.
What I'm thinking is that I can get two custom tunes, leave the level 1 tune (trans only) and then replace level 2 and 3 with custom tunes. If that sounds like a good idea it looks like its going to be 25$+60+60+15= 160$

I had mine uprgraded and it was the best improvement performance wise I have made. It took about a month or so. If I were you and I was going to get two performance tunes I'd keep the canned tow tune and replace the canned trans only. Never know when you might need a tow tune?

That's a good point but will it make a difference in level 1? I didn't know if an intake and exhaust would affect a trans only tune.

Thats exactly what I did. I got the 87 Performance, kept the 87 Torque/Tow and got the 93 Performance.

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question completely but you can have any custom tune put in any of the 3 levels. It overwrites the canned settings. I have a custom tow in level one, a custom 87 perf in level two and the canned 93 perf in level 3 which I will probably upgrade at some point because the custom 87 is as good or better than the canned level 3 IMO.

The trans tune uses the same AFR tables as stock and switches the shift points and firmness.
So if your running a CAI the level 2 canned tow is the preferred. one to run. The tow tune runs richer.

You will get much better downshifting with the custom tunes. This was very important to me for passing on freeways and two lane roads. Plus, my 87 Performance tune performs better overall than level 3 did with the Edge. I have a 93 Performance tune and never feel the need to use it.

Another factor, your Edge tune is for a stock intake, so you are not really benefiting from the CAI completely. Only about 50%. The custom tune will make the most of that mod.

This is all pretty interesting. I added a Volant CAI and cat back duals to my 5.4 L 06 4x4 and I'm running the Level 3 stock performance tune in my Edge EVo. Am I reading correctly that I could/should upgrade to the Gryphon and could get a 87 performance custom tune that would run just as good if not better???

That is correct. I ran Level 3 for over 30,000 miles and thought I was happy. My only complaint was sometimes needing to downshift and go, but at certain speeds, I would punch it and no downshift. Just a gradual increase in speed. That can be dangerous on the freeway or a two lane highway, but I learned to live with it. Eventually, I decided to get two tunes from Bill, an 87 Perf and a 93 Perf, keep level 2 for the small amount of towing I do.

Bill tweaks his custom tune so that I really did not lose any power going to the 87 Perf from level 3, and now it will downshift at almost any speed. I can be running at 60 mph on a highway, punch it and it downshifts and takes off like a scalded dog. I have almost 34,000 miles on the custom tunes, and almost all of them are on the 87 Perf. I just never feel the need to plug in the 93 Perf. It is stronger, but the 87 is all I need and you can calculate the savings. Just as I would have not wanted to go back to stock after experiencing the Edge, I do not want to go back to canned tunes after experiencing the custom. The savings paid for both custom tunes in 6 months.
