Gryphon Unit question...

I'm really interested in purchasing one of these units. Sucks I missed the Cyber Monday deal, but was doing all the research I could to make sure this was the unit for me.

Last night, I threw on my AEM brute force intake, but its getting to cold right now to consider any other performance mods (least til the spring). I plan on getting underdrive pulleys, Troyer Efan, and full exhaust with headers. Would it be easier to get the basic unit and then get a custom tune(s) later once I have everything installed?

Also, on the "canned" tunes with the unit, would it be beneficial to run on the tow setting for some more power and fuel mileage? Or will it make a difference in mileage that much if I'm not towing anything. Probably a dumb question, but just curious. I won't be using the 93 performance tune since I'm in a small town and that's not readily available.

Truck: 2006 XLT 5.4 4x4 screw. Only mod atm is the AEM intake.

Thanks in advance.

1. I would order the gryphon with everything on the list thats going to be modded for the custom tunes
2. Order all the mod stuff. In the mean time get used to the gryphon and the canned/generic tunes. Since you have a CAI run the level 2 canned tow tune.
3. Wait until the custom tunes are done.
4. Do the mods.
5. Load the custom tunes.
6. Done.
If you plan everything out there should hardly be any waiting for the custom tunes.

Will it make a difference if I choose some custom tunes for the mods, then change my mind later? Guess if I tell PHP I am going to install OBX LT's for example, but later on just go with a catback system and stock manifolds, is that going to ruin the tunes or will it still run good? (Obviously, not as good if those were installed correct?)

Headers make a difference. I would think you need to have it tuned for headers or tuned for cat back.

So would it be best to just order the "canned" tunes and send in another order later for the custom ones once I have everything I am going to install on the truck? I really want to add headers, but every time I think about them I remember how much of a pita they can be.. =P

I would not get the custom tune until I knew for sure on the headers.

But the "stock" or "canned" tunes that come with the unit should be fine? Just run lvl 2 (tow, 87) until everything is done with the truck (performance) wise and send in for a custom tune to top it off?

With headers you need a custom tune to get back some of the low end torqe loss.
If you are going to do the mods but wait on the headers you can always request a recalibrated tune if your going to do the headers later.
But being practical I would request a recalibration even before I start the headers not after.

Yes, you should be fine running the level 2 canned tow tune.
I would suggest figuring out what your going to do and order your custom tune at the same time. When then tune is done you don't have to load it right away! It can just sit there and wait for you on there server.
