Order of mods

2006 F150 XLT 5.4 SCAB 3.73 Axle

I am putting on AS 2.5" LK this weekend, and putting on 4 new Toyo MTs (285/75/17) on stock 17s. I am also doing the following mods in the next 3-6 months:

-True duals: stock cats (for now), 2x flowmaster (probably super 44s), out back, 2.5 " pipe

-K&N FIPK CAI

-Tuner (either Edge or PHP Gryphon)

So, I am looking for advice as to what order I should mod in, and what if any ill effect I will have if I mod prior to getting tuner (i.e.- can I run with just ECM until I can put in a tuner...)

Thanks guys!
-Mick

Personally, I'd do the tuner first. Bluejay has said it before, and I agree - it's the last mod I'd want to give up. This will allow you to recalibrate for the different tire size, and if you go with the Gryphon, it will allow you to get a custom tune to get the most out of that CAI.

Agreed. I would also consider doing the self mod to the stock intake described in the how to section and skipping the CAI. Get the duals as soon as possible for the sound!

I both agree and disagree.
If you're getting the Edge, do if first.
If you're getting the Gryphon I suggest getting your other parts first since the Gryphon tunes are custom made to YOUR specific truck and all the mods YOU have. I'd hate to think you'd end up paying for a retune because your intake/exhaust combo is running you a little too lean after you already bought the tunes for a stock truck.

Talk to Bill at PHP it may not make a difference but it's not really a custom tune if all your mods aren't considered.

The Gryphon comes with basically the same canned tunes as the Edge. You can order the custom tunes later when you need them. you won't have to send itin like the Edge, to get it converted.

Ah, I did not know that. I thought it had to come with custom tunes. I have the Edge now and have been meaning to get the Gryphon but have bigger plans in mind that I'll let everyone in on soon hopefully.

Do the tuner/programmer first.

Mick, I agree with the majority here. If you're putting in a CAI, you DO want custom tunes. So, if you get the Gryphon, tell Bill about the planned CAI mod so he can write your tunes accordingly. You can run the truck on Level 2 or leave it at stock until the tunes are written if you install the CAI before then. The Level 2 tune is somewhat richer than others, so it will help counter the "lean problem" caused by the CAI.

Get the programmer first.

Thanks everyone for input! I am trying to get ahold of them at the shop, I emailed Bill from the PHP website, but no response yet. I am going to go with a PHP tuner, so I can update it w/o sending it back over and over (the 5% military disc is nice too). Now, removing my rear cats on my 06 and putting true duals with x-pipe, will that effect me before I put tuner in???

You can run with tru duals but might lose some low end torque. So a custom tune would help make up for the loss.
Let Bill know you are doing this.

true duals do not cause an engine to run lean

I'd change the list up a little bit. I'd run the dual Magnaflow kit or at least use Magnaflow mufflers instead of the Flowmasters. The Magnaflow kit's quality is second to none. It's amazing how well it fits and sounds! As far as cai, I really like the S&B since it gains a lot of power and it's a closed box design. This way the filter is protected a little more. Last I would get the SCT Xcal3 from a tuner like VMPTuning.com, don't waste your time with canned tunes. Irregardless you can't even run canned tunes or the stock tune with the addition of an air intake since you'll run lean.
