Hypertech Power Programmer III
Hypertech Power Programmer III
How good is the HPP III?? The previous owner gave it to me when I bought the truck. He said it was on the 87 octane tune. I hope he wrong as I feel my truck lacks in the "get up and go" category. He did replace the battery a couple weeks back...would that reset the ECU? I haven't had the time to even hook it up and confirm what setting its on.
Second---how does HHP III compare to the newer Hypertechs or Edge. And what is this gryphon I keep reading about---DirtySCREW

The Gryphon is an Edge hardware platform that has been rebranded so that it can be "custom tuned" by PHP. Anyone who has custom tunes from any tuner (PHP, Troyer or VMP) will tell you they're the BEST thing you can do for your truck.
Edit: Please read the "Questions About Tunes" sticky at the top of this forum.

Changing the battery does reset the KAM in the PCM if its out more than just a few minutes. The idle, fuel pump, shift adaptive, trims, etc. are all set back to the PCM baselines (whether that's the OEM definitions or the aftermarket tune), and the PCM will relearn/adapt these after the reset. Depending on how the tune was set up, you'll often notice the biggest change in shifting adaptive after a 100 miles or so of driving.
DirtySCREW - I want to clarify something you COULD misunderstand from the last post. Disconnecting the battery DOES NOT reset the "tune" to stock. Once a tune is "burned" into the EPROM in the PCM, it stays there until you burn a different one in, with a programmer.
However, all of the "refinements" will have to be relearned as was stated. Usually, people seem to think the truck feels "twitchy" or sensitive until this has taken place.

Thanks guys---I'll have to MAKE time today and even see what the truck is on...if it has teh 87 tune or not. I hope and pray it DOESN'T as it just feels sluggest compared to other V8s I'm use to. I posted about my trucks performance in another section and used the 05 Yukon I use to own as an example. Granted my Yukon with it 5.3L had 3.73 gears, and I added a K&N drop in and Flowmaster 50 SIDO exhaust. The Yukon was rated at 285Hp and I found 295 lb ft torque; but another member advised it had 300-something lb ft torque. My 03 SCREW has 260 Hp and 350 lb ft torque. Add maybe 10HP and 10lb ft torque for the Airaid CAI and I'm up to 270HP/360lb ft torque. I'm suppose to be on the 87 tune from the Hypertech programmer. My Yukon was heavier and had more get up and go. It had so much get up and go that I was impressed that such a large SUV could moved like that. My seat of the pants dyno is not that impressed with the SCREWs performance. I know this is a TRUCK and not a Mustang or Camaro; however I would at LEAST like to get to my Yukon performance. Which I guess this rambling brings me to my question---why with more torque isn't my SCREW giving better performance? Someone advised that the Yukon had electric fans from factory which it did. Is that such a HP robbing item on my SCREW since it does not have electric fans? I plan on putting some magnaflows on later on. I need to go see what my Hypertech says. I don't even know what to do---I know it plugs in to OBDII port..but that about it. DO I just have the ignition on but the truck NOT running, or do I crank the truck then plug it up?----DirtySCREW

Try to find a user manual for the Hypertech. I think you should be able to download one from Hypertech's website. One thing I'm sure of though, DO NOT crank your engine while you're doing any kind of programming. The ignition has to be ON (with the engine OFF) for programming to complete properly. The part I'm not sure of is, "Should the ignition be ON or OFF when you first plug the programmer in?"
The programmer gets its power from the OBD port and, during programming, it sends an 18 volt "signal" to the PCM which enables the EPROM to accept a new program. You must not interrupt this process in any way - cranking the engine or turning the ignition off would interrupt it. AND, your battery needs to be in good condition - have all accessories off do minimize any voltage reduction on the battery.
There may be updates available for the Hypertech at their website too. It would be best to download and install any that exist before you plug this device into your truck.

EGR is meant to control oxides of nitrogen formation - it's a pollution control device. And, I don't have a tech manual for your year truck.
You MAY need to clean something, like an EGR valve or possibly the throttle body. But that's all just a guess.
