Why the extremely hard WOT shift?

why is it that whenever i go wide open whether from a stand still or rolling, the shift at 5,000rpms or so is really really hard? im running the 93 performance tune right now from VMP. i mean it did this before i got the tuner but it does it a little worse now since i guess the shifting is firmer, but is there a way to change how hard that one shift is? i love the firm shifting when cruising, but whenver i floor it that oen shift is a PITA

Isn't there a "user adjustment" for the WOT 3-4 upshift? If not, I'd get in touch with Justin and tell HIM your observations. I'm sure he can adjust either the line pressure, torque reduction or clutch engagement delay (or all three) to give you what you want.

If it was extremely hard before the tuner than I don't think it's a programming issue ..

Actually, it might be (although I don't know why ir would have been hard at stock).

But Justin would have "tightened" up all the shifts to correct the "mushy" ones Ford builds into the stock tunes. So, if he did that to the stock tune, it's going to be worse. He can go the other way to soften it.

I've never seen a factory tune from any OEM that had shifts that were "rough". I'm not denying that tuners make the shifts firmer. It's just possible that there is a mechanical issue if the shifts were rough on the factory tune and now with shift pressure being increased that it's making it more pronounced.

i think there's a little of both, mechanical and tuner. To be honest unless you are getting a dyno by Justin and tell him your expecations on shift firmness he's just going to jack up the tune so it shifts as hard as possible. I don't blame him, a lot of people with N/A vehicles including the ones I owned want hard shifts cause for that illusion of power. There's bad and good to this though, just be careful or you'll be spending a few thousand on a new trans due to a hundred dollar programmer.

You have an extremely valid point here FordRacer! I didn't mean to say otherwise. I was just trying to explain why the shift felt even "harder" after the tune. You are quite right when you say there may be a mechanical issue (or some other issue).

Sorry, sometimes I'm not at all clear.

I really think this is something the OP needs to discuss with Justin. I think Justin will be able to give GOOD advice that won't ruin the transmission. But, perhaps in talking to Justin, the OP can give a better description of what it is that he's finding so objectionable. Then maybe Justin can provide a better diagnosis and possible solution.
