Realistic expectations?
I'm going to redo my exhaust and then get a PHP Gryphon soon. I was just curious on a custom 87 tune, what are realistic expectations as far as gas mileage improvements? Am I looking at .5mpg? or more like 2mpg, just wanted to see what everyone got from it. I really want it to help throttle response, play power and speedo recalibration, just let me know what ya know! Thanks
My experience was somewhere in the 1.5-2.0 mpg range - and MUCH improved driveability!
To be fair, I think you could expect this from any GOOD custom tuner, but I also appreciate the gauges the Gryphon gives me - especially while towing.

I don't know of any realistic way to measure 1 mpg on the road. And it doesn't make sense to me how a tuner can decrease the ammount of energy required to get your truck down the road. So don't buy it for that. IMO
If there was a way to improve these truck's fuel economy, (especially by 10%) (2mpg) don't you think that Ford would already be doing it?
Remember the switch to 20W oil. Ford did it because it yielded minescule mpg gains.
Suppose that it does get you 2mpg better, at what cost does the mpg gain come? Furthermore, why didn't Ford do it already? Emissions? Longevity? Driveability? Etc.
Just some food for thought.

Chester, this has been discussed ad infinitum on here. Ford doesn't do it because they want everyone to buy trucks and a lot of people (women especially) do not like hard or quick shifts. Ford programs in slop to make a smoother drive. Unfortunately this lowest common denominator tuning style is not the most efficient. MPG gains can be made in tuning for efficiency.
Well I guess that 2 MPG's I picked up after going from stock programming to the EDGE never actually happened...

Not many people like firm shifts. If the average consumer test drives an F150 and it shifts too firmly, they are going to think "what is wrong with this transmission?"
Boom. Ford loses a sale.

most people change thier driving habits when they get more power hence the loss of mileage...
drive it gently and you'll see the gains drive it like you stole and you'll lose mileage

So drive it easy, and I can get that 2mpg?
driving habits will yeild the biggest gains.. thats where the new bully dog tuner has teh driving coach, so everytime you get on it yells at you.
cars.trucks and atvs ect are all built with a generic platform to try to please evryone. thats when custom tuning and performance come in.. if your fine with stock then leave it alone but for improved shifting and larger tires or aftermanrket exhaust ect is added you need to make compromises. either perfomance suffers or you fix it.
as for economy tunes. the will add addition mpg and more with better driving habits.
