Edge Question
Edge Question
Ok after reading all the positive posts on the Edge I broke down and bought one. I have a stock 2003 F-150 with the 4.6. I do not see any changes from stock to the level 2 towing mode. My MPG stay the same I run the same RPM's and the Engine load stays the same. I have not yet towed my camper with it yet but from what i been reading I should notice something on normal driving. Anyone with any input would be greatly appreciated.
Also has any one tried to custom tune theirs for daily driving for better MPG? If so what parameters have you changed.

I didn't notice a huge difference in power either, but there is some difference. The major difference for me is in the shifting.
I'm wondering if a custom tune by PHP would make that much more of a difference, or would I be disappointed after spending even more money than I just did on the Edge.

I agree
I kicked around the idea of a custom program as well but I would be very upset to find I wasted any more money. I will say I am very dissapointed as of now with the egde maybe this weekend pulling the camper it will change my mind.
My truck was reflashed twice by the dealer, once for bad hesitation and once just because they thought it might help it. The canned tunes were a huge improvement. So much so that I hated to return it to stock for any reason. The custom tunes picked up a little more power, but the biggest improvement was downshifting. The 87 Performance tune is perfect for my everyday driving. So much so, I would hate to return to the canned tunes now.
If the canned tunes did not make a big power difference, I would hesitate to think the custom would add much more. That is unless there is something that is not exactly right, that would get fixed in a custom tune.
I was running Level 3 all the time with the canned tunes and paying 20 cents to 30 cents a gallon more for 93 over 87. So, by getting a custom tune that is even better for my driving than Level 3, my custom tunes paid for themselves in about 6 months. This may not turn out the same for all trucks, but if mine failed today, I would be on the phone ordering a Gryphon with the same custom tunes.

It's interesting to me, mja2770, that you don't feel a difference driving with the Level 2 tune. I immediately noticed in passing how the shifts were quicker, the passing power was there right away, and, I noticed a definite increase in economy when pulling my trailer, compared to what I was getting before.
In simple ordinary driving around town, if you're not aggressive (and I'm not), I doubt there's much difference.
As I've told others, a custom tune WILL improve things even more but I would not call the custom tune a world shaker compared to the canned tune. However, I get even better fuel economy from the custom tune - enough that it paid for the tune on a 2500 mile trip back when gas was pushing $4 per gallon.

It must feel like a bigger difference to others because this evening I left my house after returning the truck back to stock. I had the wife with me and I hammered it a few times where I had plenty of space and the road to myself. I thought the power was still pretty decent, but the shifts were sloppy. The tank has 94 octane fuel so that probably didn't help on the stock tune.
Once we got to where we were gong, which was to drop off my son, I switched back to level 3 and hit the road again. The wife said it hurts her neck now and it's a night and day difference.
One side of the truck did actually break loose a bit when I feathered into a full throttle launch from a dead stop.
I don't recall that ever happening before.

Ok I ran on lvl 2 all week and I see a diffrence in mpg. Not much but some, and the down shift is a big improvement. Now the problem is when I hook up to the camper around 65mph on lvl 2 my truck wants to go back and forth from 3rd gear to 4th and runs about 3800-4200rpms. On stock I can keep it around 2500 rpms.
