custom tune reliability ?

Between the three tunes that I would get TP, VMP, or Gryphon, which one has the best reliability rep.? I've read around here little things going on with guys truck like tranny problems with their tp's, etc.

Just wondering one your guys opinions that have these tunes before I would buy one?

Your likely to get a bunch of very different responses that will ultimately prove to be unhelpful.

I went with the Gryphon for the hardware and the reputation of PHP.

Good luck with your search.

I had no issues with my troyer tunes... my VMP tunes are on order (for a different vehicle)

what tuning device do you have? or are you going to buy one with custom tunes in it?

My truck has been tuned by Troyer since 13K, now pushing over 400 to the tires I have not had one issue with my truck "except traction" but I have over 70 passes at the track and with the truck pushing 70K its still a beast Mike Troyer knows how to tune these trucks!!

I don't have one now but I was planning on the xcal3.

I have heard nothing but good stuff about TP except time to get it to you and it cost a little bit more than the rest. Thats why I was leaning towards that one, but I read here somewhere that someone was having troubles with their tranny after installing the tune and that worries me a little because I tow with my fx4 80% of the time.

Troyer tuned 4 years ago!

Truck still runs like a beast after 4+ years. 100,000 miles since it was tuned and I tow 1-2 times weekly and often 6k plus. I run the towing tune exclusively, both 93 and 87 do great. 15mpg on the 93 and 14mpg on the 87 unloaded, I get 11.5-12.5 towing. No tranny problems what so ever. Wouldn't have bought any other way. It'll still smoke the tires from a standstill and I don't have to worry about if it's got enough left to pass while pulling.

A custom tune from either Troyer, VMP, or PHP are equally reliable.

Personally I have two custom tunes from PHP for my Edge (87 perf, 93 perf) and they are perfectly reliable.

When you consider the number of members on this site that have tunes from Troyer, VMP and Power Hungry Performance, it is amazing how few complaints there are. They are all very reliable, especially when you consider what they are achieving.

Caforddude 10-05-2008 11:21 PM

I will tell you that my experience with Bill and Corey at PHP has been second to none. They answered a bunch of questions before I purchased the tuner, worked with me to get it shiped out fast and from the looks and feel of it, put together a great product.

Now to be fair I also emailed Justin over at VMP and he was equally as great in his response to me. The actual device is what put PHP over the top for me. Might not be for you.

I would bet that most people have had similar great experiences with each of the three big tuners here on F150online, which is why they all trumpet them when asked. I guess maybe you should ask yourself:
1)What do you want in a device and who sells a device that most closely matches what you want.
2)What do you want out of a tune? Talk to the people who are going to actually do the tuning and see if they think they can deliver what you are looking for

X2 from me on Bill and Corey at PHP! They will not try to sell you on anything and they make sure you get what YOU want.

I tow, often up or over high mountains, so I wanted the extra gauges that the Gryphon provides. You could also get a different programmer at a lower price and add a Scangauge unit to get the gauges, but the total price will be a bit more I think.

The Gryphon and Bill's tunes have really satisfied my needs.
