Gryphon Display

I am on the verge of ordering a custom tuner for my truck. My truck is very mild compared to some on here. I am just waiting for all the parts to come in and will end up with a leveling kit, CAI and CAT back exhaust all sittin on 33's.

I am going to do either the XCAL3 from VMP or the Gryphon from PHP.

My question is about wether the display ability of the gryphon is worth the extra money? Does it just pull info from the same place my gauges pull info or is from somewhere more accurate? I mean I don't think I really need a second speedometer??

I'm not asking who is the better tuner. Just for your guys opinion of the products.

Thanks in advance. I am looking to make the purchase Friday pr Saturday so it will be here by the time my upgrades are done.

I use my gauges all the time. I tow a trailer and as far as I am concerned the Gryphon was a must for my needs. I like seeing everything my truck is doing at a click of a button. So yes it is worth the money not only that PHP are great people and will take care of you. Call Bill and ask him they sell the other brand as well, one stop shopping.

yeah, the gauges are really just a nice little gadget, unless you are doing something like towing where you are near the limits of your truck. do you really need to know the transmission temp? no, but if you like showing off nifty little gadgets, then you might want the gryphon.

also, you can see more stuff than what you have on on your dash board. you also can take 0-60's and 1/4 miles if that matters.

If I'm not mistaken you shouldn't use either tuners canned tunes with an intake your giong to need custom tunes for your CAI!

With the gryphon you get real time gauges, such as intake air temp, trans temp, Avg. MPG, cam speed, several others.
both tuners can do your performance tests 0-60 1/4 mile.
Now, what might be the selling factor for you is the turn around time. IDK? I do beleive VMP can get your tunes alot sooner than PHP, so that may close the sale for you, seeing how you mentioned have your CAI on the way.

The gauges in your dash are on-off switches. They do not tell you what is actually happening. I have my Gryphon monitoring Engine temp, trans fluid temp, voltage and digital mph(it's accurate, the truck speedometer is off 2 mph). I was monitoring oil temp, but I replaced that with the voltage after my battery died and I had no warning. The only reason I ever look at the instrument panel is to see how much gas I have left. There are over 20 items you can monitor.

If this is not of interest to you, then by all means, get the Xcal3 with custom tunes. If it is something you will use, get the Gryphon with custom tunes. With the CAI and exhaust change, you will need custom tunes.

Thanks for your input guys. I did email Bill over at PHP today but they may very well be closed for the weekend already.

I kind of a gadget person and had never thought about the option of monitoring things other then what the dash already displays.

Thanks for your help guys.

I was planning on doing the custom tunes. will it be an issue if I get my parts installed and run around with them for a few days before my tunes come in?

what you'll do is upgrade to the gryphon(recased edge evo) then you can have PHP custom tunes.

CaFordDude,
I think you should wait on modding until you get the custom tunes.. and while your waiting for the mods and tunes use the canned tunes..
That way you can really see the differences in your mods! just my 2 cents..

Well I am kind of hoping the turn around would be pretty good. I have no idea how long the wait is to get tunes done with PHP. Will prolly know more after they email me.

I was originaly going to go with a superchips but then was schooled, mostly by this site, about the need for a custom tune. Now I am kind of in a time crunch because the parts will be at the shop and not sure how long they will sit on them before forcing the install. I have a solid week before the install so I am not sure if I can get the tunes done in that time or not.

Guess I will have to wait and see.

Either way I am EXCITED!

can someone post their gryphon display, still have not seen the unit. Is it custom tunable, and who makes it?
