depends on how far you are planning to go.

I started with a hypertech, then sold it and upgraded to an Xcal2 when I started past teh simple bolt ons, if you are not going supercharged or turbo charged then a hypertech is a good canned tuner. however I would recommend trying to find a used xcal2 and get a custom tune for it (you only need one tune)

Do you tow or use your truck for racing? what mods have you allready done?

It depends if you want to go for a custom or a canned tuner. Custom will be better for you but if you don't want to wait you can get a canned tune. I here superchips is pretty good for canned.

Well as of right now, mods are few.. I use the truck to haul the Mustang to the track a couple times a year, other than that everyday driving, hunting season, etc.....
In the future I plan on doing more mods like a turbo build, but not for a year or so...

Mods are below...

Shorty Ford Racing Hedders
Magnaflow Catback
CAI

Rancho Adj Shocks
33 BGF Mud Terrains

i have a 02 5.4 with a superchip. If your looking for cheap and simple, its the way to go. I think they only run around 200 (last time i looked for them), easy to use, and give a definate performance boost.

If you are looking for a programmer that can grow with you. Then my recomendation would be to look into a custom tuned programmer. My personal preference is the Grygphon from PHP. Thier customer service is #1 and they can tune for turbos and superchargers. Again this is my opinion based on my experiences I have had in dealing with them.
