What Exactly Is a "chip"

Probably a stupid question for most but what exactly is a "chip" or programmer? would their be a point in putting a chip or programmer in a brand new truck? Does it just tell you problem codes when your check engine light comes on? Finally what would be recommended for an 08 FX4 5.4? Thanks a lot guys!!

Originally, you reprogarmmed your computer by replacing the chip. The computers we now have are modified by a hand held progammer. So the chip stays in the hand held unit.

There are some that are just diagnostc, but what we are usually talking about is one that reprograms for better performance. Adds 25 to 30 HP and better shifting, etc.

Well the 2004+ F150s do not use a chip, they use a programmer. A programmer is going to make more power, shift a lot better, and can be tuned for other mods like air intakes, etc. Programmers can compensate for larger tires, gear changes, etc. Programmers also can get you some better mileage but that shouldn't ever be your sole reason for buying one. Programmers can also be used as a scan tool to find out DTC codes but that's just a plus side to them.

Ok great that sounds good. Really good info guys. So in reality no need to really put a programmer in a brand new truck huh?

No "need" to unless you are like me and want it to perform to it's potential. My truck was sluggish, lazy shifting, had a hesitation and I needed to change trie size. So it was a "must" for me. Might not be for you.
