Which is best for me?

I have a 2004 F-150 scab with a 4.6. Stock except for a K&N air filter. I do not live in a city so most of my driving is at highway speeds.

Here are my issues:
1. While driving, when I go to pass, the transmission takes at least 1-3 seconds to decide to downshift out of overdrive and then pick a gear before the engine makes power.

2. I am not impressed with the transmission shifting pattern. Hate the soft shifts and it just doesn't seem to shift where it should for where I have the peddle pressed to.

I have had this truck for 1 year now and maybe it is the way I drive it. This is my first "fly-by-wire" vehicle ( other then my Mack ) so maybe it's the difference between what I expect from the peddle and what the computer wants to give me.

What do you people think would be a good list of things to start changing/adding/modding on this truck so I can get what I expect out of it. Even if it's just that the interface between the seat and the peddle/wheel needs adjusting, well that's just fine too.

Thanks for any input.

A programer will solve your problems. Next problem which one. Start reading I would suggest a custom tune, Troyer, VMP, Gryphon, PHP and the list goes on. Good Luck.

Custom tuning would eliminate all those problems and make it right

'05 Screw with the 4.6l here, and I had the same issues with the shifting, throttle response...

I did a couple of mods before getting tunes, exhaust and "cai", but by far the best money I spent was on Troyer's tuning.

I'd highly recommend Troyer tuning although the wait time is long.

Read up on here about tuners and decide who to go with.. there are several that can write excellent tunes that'll address the stupidly soft shifts and throttle response.

I have Troyer and I like what I have. I can't endorse Troyer over any other tuner because I have nothing to compare my tunes with. Think about that. Everybody who has a tune, only has a tune from 1 tuner. I do not recall anybody here who is able to say that they have a tune file from every tuner, dyno'ed their truck with the different tune files, then ran each tune at the track, and is now able to say without prejudice that there is a certain tuner who writes a better tune than the others.

Your best bet is to visit the different websites of the tuning companies, and also look into canned tunes, then call and talk to the people you are planning on spending a few hundred dollars with.

Keep in mind that everything an Edge Evolution can do, you can also do with a Gryphon. For gauges and tunes, you can also use SCT Livewire. If you plan on keeping your hand held unit and using it with your next car or truck, then you will have to consider the SCT X3 when looking at the X-Calibrator II. SCT & Edge are not alone. There is also Diablosport's Predator, Accel's Ford Power Processor, Superchips, Gale Banks, Hypertech, et cetera.

On a side note, the Edge is made for stock trucks only.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I've been looking around at the various tuners and reading the forums. I just wanted to make sure that my shifting and throttle response would be addressed since those are my issues with my truck.

By the time I get done reading up on all the options I'll have the money to spend on what I decide on.

Circuit, the one thing I think most of us here would say above all is to get tunes written for your truck, not go with canned tunes.

There are several custom tuners on here that can give you a whole new truck.. They'll want to know some details about your setup before doing any tunes, which is a good thing..

Most don't charge any more than you'd pay for a "canned" tuning device to write, usually, 3 different tunes for your vehicle..

Definitely the way to go!

X2

i went with an edge evo, i was pretty satisfied for a while until i started adding other things such as an intake. Now after realizing the dge evo is for stock motors only, I wish I went custom from the beginning! would have saved me alot of money and time.
live and learn and try to save others from your mistakes!
