Edge or Custom Tuned

I am looking for a little bit of guidance here.

I have an 06 Scab 4x4. It is about ready to hit 60k miles on the odometer. I would like to get a tuner for the truck to try and add a little power/drivability to the truck as I have a trip to Myrtle Beach coming up this summer. Driving through the mountains of West Virginia is gonna kill my mileage I know.

But here is where I am torn. I don't want to add a CAI to my truck. I work in a steel mill and there is quite a bit of dusty roads around here. I do not go offroading at all. But I am slightly open to adding one.

I would like to be able to sell my tuner if anything happens to my truck to regain some kind of losses. And I would like to make this a minimal purchase. The wife is nagging at me to buy a new washer/dryer for her when the tax man delivers a check.

I was pondering picking up the Troyer group buy for $550 bucks for a tune and dyno run. But if I did that I would end up spending more money on an intake and stuff like that. This is not really want I am looking forward to because I swore to pay off my credit card from my last stint of computer modding.

So would I be better off buying an Edge, calling it a day, or should I pick up some custom tunes?

If the wife isn't happy, you're not going to be happy. You need to make her think it was her idea. I would get custom tunes and 3.5" AF1 CAI from Troyer.

I am leaning more towards Troyer due to the fact their group buy includes a dyno session with it. But will involved probably 3 hours drive time to get there.

But I still have a lot to weigh in on this. Such as increased cost over the Edge, plus the likelihood of buying a CAI.

Another option is a custom tuned Edge unit.

Your original description of what you wanted sounds tailor made for an Edge. I have the Edge as I wanted more performance, yet had no intention of getting a CAI (although, the AF1 is supposed to work fine with the Edge). Also, I wanted the gauges, I use them constantly. Another plus is that, later, you can sell the Edge and recover some of your cost.

However, if getting the optimum performance out of the truck is important, you should definitely go custom. Either Troyer or Justin if you go with Xcal. One other consideration to add into the mix, as mentioned above, the Edge can be custom tuned by ASEMechanic.

Whichever you decide, get a tuner, they are awesome!

The Edge seems better suited for your needs. "IF" your leaving everything else stock. Even if not and change your mind later can make changes.

However many are going to recommand going with Troyer or VMP. You cant go wrong with any of them just depends on the gagues, mods, money and how quick you are wanting it.

Good LucK!

BTW..Turd Furguson you going to meet us next Saturday in Lexington??

I agree, go custom tuned without a doubt. It's leaps and bounds ahead of any canned tuner. Yes, I do swear by my VMP tunes because they flat out are awesome and Justin can get them to you fast. Otherwise ,I wouldn't be sending everyone I could his way.

PS: I had the Edge and decided to make the switch. Don't make the same mistake that I did ...

I am probably going to end up getting an Evolution. There isn't going to be much money going into the performance part as it will put a huge strain on the old wallet. I will see if I can sneak one in here tonight with some sweet talking. I am the type of person whom when they drive listen to all the sounds the vehicle makes. My wife hates it b/c I nitpick stuff when we drive. So the added gauge functionality may be interesting...

As for the meet in Lexington, I am pondering it. The wifey gets off work at 2pm and the meet is a little earlier. Gotta get my permission first. Lexington is only 1.5 hours away from me so it wouldn't be a bad drive pending I can find the place. LOL!

Your first choice was my best choice for "me"!
$250.00 with gagues and took 2 days to arrive and install!

If I was rich id probably keep my edge for gagues and buy a custom tune from troyer to try out. But what I have now is working so have to stay with it. However if I didnt already have any tunes and had the money would try VMP or troyer to review. I love my gagues however.

Keep us posted and if you need any help on directions let us know. Should be a lot of fun and could check out other guys CAI and tuners for questions before you spend the doe.

I bought mine from a member here in the forums for $250.00, a year ago Troyer wasnt "as" popular or didnt seem to be when I was researching at that time. Im pretty sure they were $400.00 then so I figured for $250.00 I couldnt go worong! Its always worked great for me and after Bill made some adjustments it woke it up even more. I just sent him a list of my mods, cai, exhaust ect. For another $50.00 so everything was $300.00 total. If I come accross the extra money in the next year may try a VMP or Troyer xcal and tunes for kicks.

Im really wanting e-fans now.

You have a stock truck.

The EDGE optimizes the factory tune.

EDGE will have a better resale value.
(I sold mine for more than i bought it for when new.)
