built tranny

i just got my truck back and i now have a built tranny. when i hooked up my edge and put it on level two, no modifications in timing shift firmness or anything, it is shifting extremely hard. and on downshifts fron od to third it hits real hard, what should i do about this? are the shifts hard because of the built tranny? b4 i put the edge in it shifted harder than stock but not as bad as with the edge. i would not like to blow another tranny so some knowledgeable help would be nice. when i was on the highway my OD on/off light was flashing, what does this mean? it stopped when i turned the truck off and did not flash again. im happy to have a built tranny, dont mind the harder shift at all, im wonderin if im hurtin it though. its shiftin hard...

If it's hard enough to make you concerned, then it is probably too hard. The O/D Light blinking is telling you there is a problem. Most of the time it is something related to the torque converter, but could be any number of things. Did you check to see if you had any DTCs (trouble codes)? If so, please post them. Also, who did the tranny? Ford? Independent?

Also, refresh my noggin... What year, Cal (HEX) code, Firmware version and Calibration version?

I am with you... popping another tranny is not anyone's idea of a good time and I will do my best to help figure out what's going on.

Bill

If I just dropped a built tyranny in my truck, I would expect it to perform perfectly from the get go

hard shifts when you call for them is a good thing

ya got’ a drive it; it’ll loosen up

I agree with you on all counts... except I am concerned about the blinking O/D Light. That is definitely a problem that needs to be investigated.

yep i checked those two codes and thats what they are.

well i got this built tranny, brand new, looks great. what exactly is different with the built? i know that it is heavy duty but what else? i know that it can handle more than the stock but i dont think its strong enough for a supercharger, not that id do that to a 4.6 with 100k

how can i tell which tranny i have? i got the vin #. i also would like to know if i have the romeo or windsor motor. if you know how to tell lemme know.

and i think the speed sensor code has something to do with the od light flashing. what is going on there?

id like to know which tranny i got, im figuring the 4r70 also the diff between the romeo and windsor, i know that they are made in diff places, but if there is any diff in the make

So you bought a "built" transmission but you have no idea what's built about it?

Just like your post.

I was simply asking a question. I don't see how anyone could spend money on a "built" transmission without researching it.

i know engines, i dont know transmission other than that they involve clutches, a valve body, solenoids , springs , pumps and a convertor.
i have a "built" transmission in my firebird that will run circle around your car and i couldnt tell you to save my life what brand of clutches, and other stuff it has other than a 2600 rpm yank convertor.

all you were doing was taking a shot at the poster. thats ok, just dont hide behind it and act like your #1 concern is helping out.

my post was sacasim plain and simple hey maybe we could call justin at vmp and he can work this out (more sarcasim)

That's funny, running circles around my car? Too bad you have no idea what my car has to be making those kind of statements.

Regardless, I was asking a question. I never acted like I was trying to help out so I wasn't hiding behind anything. I just find it comical that people spend money on something that they don't know what they are buying. That's nice that you like to just buy things on a whim, most of us research before we buy.

Go figure.

well, the guy who did the work is a friend of the family. so i kinda trust the guy...been doin work for me and my friends for years. i use the truck for work so he reccomended a more heavy duty built tranny since i tow and use the truck as an actual work truck, unlike a lot of people i know who drive a truck to be bad a$$, mostly dodge drivers. i was just simply asking if the tourque converter, solenoids, cluth packs and all of that was just a stronger material or if the whole tranny is reconfigured.
i dont know everything about it thats why i asked. a stronger tranny sounded great to me for what i do. it wont run circles around anything i just want to be able to go where i need to go mud/gravel/snow/logging roads...tow what i want to tow snowmobile trailer/landscape trailer/eqipment trailer/camper/chevys outta the snow... and haul what i want to haul rocks/dead deer/sod/cow manure/compost/chicks/beer/huntin/fishin supplies,

and so i queried and came to the conclusion that if i had a stronger tranny, i would be able to do these w/out worrying bout blowing it up again.

now can someone help me figure out why all the damn thing downshifts so damn hard it nearly throws me outta the truck and let me know if its normal.

also what the hell is with the blinkin OD on/off switch

another thing, i want more horses so i know if i got a built tranny it can handle it. now i need gears and better axels, but that will come later

Your Tranny builder may have done his own version of a shift kit hense the hard shifts. I once had a tranny built for a 4x4 and I wanted it to shift hard well I got what I wanted and a whole lot more. Ever time it shifted it would dang near knock your teeth out so I went back to him and he toned it down a couple of notches. You may check with your builder to see if he can re adjust the shift firmness. I am not sure about the blinking O/D light it may be a by-product to the hard shifts. I would call your builder and ask him.
