Tuner Vs. Longevity

I have been thinking about getting a tuner for some time now. My only question is about engine longevity.

I always keep my trucks as long as possible. I have 36,000 miles on it now, and I am hoping to get a good 180-200,000 miles out of it.

I would like to have better performance out of my 4.6, but dont want to run into problems down the road.

I was thinking about getting an edge, but the SCT livewire looks to be what I want. I have to have gauges as my truck does not have a tach, and I need one.

I have an '05 4.6 liter, scab 4x4 STX.
Roush CAI, and Roush Offroad Exhaust.

I got my truck custom tuned with the XCAL2 by troyer almost 2 years ago. At the time, my truck had 70K miles. My truck now has around 102K miles and I've had no issues. I keep up on the maintenance on my truck, and like you, I hope to get 200K+ miles outta this truck.

The edge has guages.... But as far as longevity i have not heard of anyone hurting there truck due to the tuner alone.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. LOL. Is the custom tuning worth the extra $$$ over the edge?

Let me elaborate a bit. Part of my reservations in getting a tuner is that the guy who runs the service department at the Ford dealership back home (my Dad) told me that they are very bad to get, and will hurt the engine in the long run.

He says that the 4.6 has plenty of power, and I should not need anymore.

I really hate it when people tell me "I told you so"

IDK. Everyone is going to have a differnt opinion. I dont think youll feal any differance between the two.... Not to start any fights. If you plan on doing major things in the future that would need tuning then do it now. I love my edge.

Which ever one I go with, it will be my last performance mod.

I have a 2004 STX 4X2 scab with the 4.6......24,000 miles on the clock and just added my edge this last week......DUDE!! huge power difference, i am running level 3 and it feels like a whole new truck.......you won't go wrong with a tuner...I had my reservations too, but they are all gone now....I also am running 35's and now i can break them loose if I get into it....oh ya I have the AF1 and dual exhaust..

Custom tuning owns the Edge.

That is why I am leaning towards the livewire.

My main concern is that I dont want to regret it later down the road. I still have another 150,000 or so miles to get out of this truck.

Agreed
Another option is a custom tuned Edge.

I don't think you can go wrong with Troyer, Justin, Custom Edge etc...

I went with custom tuned Edge and very happy. My decision was mostly based on dash pod, gauges and ability to see PID's realtime anytime. The tuning was insurance for the possible lean condition with CAI and cool screen program chouces and splash screen (Pics in my album)

A "custom tuned" Edge is not as programmable as an something tuned by Troyer or VMP. FYI.

I will probably go with the Livewire from Troyer.

So, no one has regretted it, or killed there ride with one yet?

Tuners are not themselves bad but a misadjusted one will cause problems down the road if not sooner.
