Bill?

Hey I have a question in regsrds to the Evo. I want to get a good tune out of it. I don't need to break any records but I like the extra power for passing. I also tow a 4500# trailer at times. I have no idea how to set the custom options. Also what intakes will work better than my Airaid with the evo? Any advice????? I currently run 89octane and have the 5.4 on a 07 FX4, and live in the great white north of Alberta Canada.
I also have reason to believe that since I took off the Airaid the shutter has dicipated....I'll run it some more and see what happens.

I'd be very interested to hear more about the Airaid and the shuddering. Let me know what you find on that.

As for custom options, some general guidelines...

For towing:

Raise shifts to extend the RPM range. This helps prevent the RPM dropping out of the maety part of the torque curve. Do the same with WOT shifts, adding 50-100 RPM on each shift. If running the appropriate setting for the octane of fuel you are using, you shouldn't have any problems there. If you are pulling through extremely hot areas (like Nevada at +100 deg) than I'd back off 1 degree of timing just for a cushion. Run the WOT fuel .1 higher than normal (in most cases around 1.5) and that should be good.

For Economy:

Generally, lowering the shifts helps economy. You can leave the WOT shifts a bit high as it really helps with "passing gear" without really affecting your daily drive. Adding 1 degree to the timing helps a bit with economy as well, although a lot can depend on the quality of fuel available. Quality fuel burns better and can run as much as +3 degrees with no problem while poor quality fuel can get detonation with standard timing tables. Also watch for oxygenated or winter blend fuels. They are not quite as forgiving to advanced timing as regular summer blends.

Hope this helps.

The airaid seems to have some sort of loud hollow droan at 1800- 2000rpm. It sounds good every other time. At that range it almost rattles everything inside. It did this even when I didn't have the edge. Ok maybe not as loud but it was still loud my passengers were asking who's p.o.s is so loud?
The shutter seems to happen in lvl3. And not all the time. The truck I guess shakes. The advice you gave in regards to towing settings, can I run them all the time? I know my truck is not a rocket ship but next time beating that Chevy to the next lights would be nice instead of beating it by a hair....
Any reasons I should update the evo? I haven't because I see lots of people run into problems after they update.
I guess another question would be what is the best intake to run with the evo. Or is the sound mine makes unusual? Or maybe even does the stock compare?
Any advice would be great.

As I have told several people already, I have had better luck with the stock airbox than I have had with CAIs. The stock box doesn't drone and I actually noticed an 8 HP gain by removing the snorkel and accordion piece from the inlet tube and replacing it with a piece a large PVC.

You should be able to run the tow settings all the time. The latest firmware and calibration seems to work well, although I had someone say they noticed a decrease in performance which I am currently looking into. It does seem to have resolved the shudder though.

Hope this helps.
