Bill,
I have a 2005 5.4. Only engine mod I have is a flowmaster super 40 in place of the factory muffler. I am going to get a K&N Drop in filter this week and wanted to know what would be good custom changes to make to my edge. I installed Saturday with no updates, but just updated today and I am going to put it back in tonight again on Level 2 for now. I would like some good power and fuel mileage. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Where do you live (I assume KY), what kind of fuel do you run (octane, and is it winter blended or not) and what do you generally use the truck for? I'll try to get something together for you.

Yes I live in KY, normally I run 87 Octane and I am unsure if it is winter blended or not, but I would assume so. It is not the formulated crap gas that is used in bigger cities though. Mainly just as a commuter vehicle and occasionally pulling a light (under 3000lbs) trailer. I like the crisp low end and passing throttle response and some decent gas mileage. I am getting really bad right now even with the edge but it had never been updated. I bought it used from a guy that had it in his truck a year and never updated. I ran it till today and updated.
Thanks!!!!

Okay, so the suggestions are a follows...

Run Level 2

WOT 1-2: 5100
WOT 2-3: 5200
WOT 3-4: 4600

Shift 1-2: -2
Shift 2-3: -2
Shift 3-4: Don't touch

Rev Limit: 5500
Speed Limit: Your choice

WOT Fuel: 1.45
Spark: +.5

This should provide good passing pull while giving you decent around-town drivability and economy.

Take care.

Also what do I need to set my tire size at? I had 275/65-18 and now they are 275/55-20 I did the calculation in the book and if i remember right it came to 2546.18, but the edge reads 2mph slower than the speedo.
Thanks

Anyway, going with a tuner is going to give you the biggest bang for your buck. The 4.6L does suffer horribly, especilly when you find that the 5.4L get just about the same fuel economy. (Sorry, didn't mean to rub salt in an already sore wound!) There are a number of reputable vendors on here that can provide you with quality programming and obviously the local favorite is Mike Troyer. Everyone seems to be pleased with his tuning. I doubt you could go wrong there.

Best of luck.

Bill,
Thanks! I have continued to monitor and ask questions to try and put together the best possible package, and do so the first time. With the input and help of others that have made mistakes or found some upgrades did not perform as advertised, I'm well on the way to getting tunes instead of some other accessories. I think after Christmas I'll take the plunge, but place my order in the next few weeks, because Troyer called me back to discuss my plan further, and they are still 4-6 weeks out.

Thanks again

The speedo will ALWAYS be 2 MPH faster the the Edge display, no matter what you put in for tire size. This is because the manufacturer hides the fact that the calibrate the speedometer 2 MPH faster than the actual speed of the vehicle. Ford does this. GM does this. Dodge does this. I am sure it is designed to help slow people down. However, according to GPS calculations and dyno runs, it does NOT cause the odometer to be inaccurate. If you were to actually try to adjust the trucks speedometer to a GPS calculation, the odometer would actually end up being inaccurate. Crazy, ain't it.

Enjoy.

"Crazy" ain't the word! Does "stupid" seem more appropriate?

Bill,

Do these settings also apply for the 4.6 (2005)?

Sadly, no. The shifting is going to be quite different because of the usable torque range for the 4.6L. I have had to run the shifts up 1 to 2 MPH, especially since the bulk of the 4.6L's I have seen are 3.55 geared.

While it is supposed to be ideal for fuel economy, it always seems to be lugging a bit and ends up needing a bit more throttle to make power. It never seems to be in the nice part of the torque curve. What I really would have liked to see was a slightly different ratio in the transmission, maybe just a touch wider, but that's not feasible.

In any event...

1-2: +2
2-3: +2
3-4: +4

That seemed to really work nicely on some of the local trucks. Again, these are suggestions and there's no hard, fast rule on customizing. It's ultimately about what feels and works good for you.

Take care.

Bill

I updated my edge before the custom tunes and my truck felt as if it lost power, and when I added the custom tune it didnt feel any different. I was running i think ver 20 with firmware 22, maybe the other way around and the truck felt as if it had lots more power before the update. I didnt customize anything and the truck would break the rear tires and s**t and get it. LOL. What I am asking is what changes have been made in the updates that would have made my truck slower?
Thanks

Let me know what your HEX code is and I'll find out what has been changed between the two versions.
