Question 4.6 needs help

I have a 1998, f-150, 4.6L, manual tranny, 3.55 gears, had factory 235's. I put 265's on it and it looks a whole lot more like a truck, but now it is a turd. I tried to pull a trailer the other day and could only run like 65MPH and got like 8-9 MPG. ....... HELP. Any ideas as to why I lost so much power and maybe how to get any of it back cheaply??????

The reason you lost so much power is the tires. You put a larger diameter tire on and that changes your overall gear range. To ultimately get it back your guna have to regear. And thats a couple of g's. I have the same exact setup as you.

I was running 265-75/16's and it was ok. I never got to see what stock tires were like as i am the second owner. Then i upgraded to 285-75/16's and it got even worse. Due to the change in ratios.

I got an edge and it made a night and day differance. My truck now runs better with the larger tires then it did with the small ones. You know how when you take a hill with the cruise on and it cuts out cuase you lose to much speed in 5th. Now my truck will accelerat(slowly mind you but never the less) up the smae hills it would lose speed on.

If your looking for cheap performance youll get the best bang for your buck with a tuner. And in my mind there is only two ways about it. Either the edge or get an Xcal2 from troyer performance. There about hte same in cost with two big differances. THe edge is a canned tuner. Its made to tune every f150 in its range. WHere the Xcal2 is costome tuned my mike. BUT.... THe edge comes with the guages that let you see everything that is going on in your truck. Mikes doesn't.

Mikes will make a few more ponys but not one that your guna notice just driving. Unless your hitting the track every day. Were at a dis advantage becuase we have a manuel tranny. A lot of the tunning changes shift points to gain some power.

If your interested in an edge i have one i looking to sell. Im looking at doing more to my engine and the edge wont work with drastic cams and other interals. Thats wht one downfall to it. But its still a night and day differance. You will love atuner. Trust me. I hate driving my truck now with out it.

you make an offer. I have it in the classifieds for 300$ and its farly new with everything including box and manuals. I will ship it for that. There 449.10 in the stores. Make me an offer and i will consider it.

By the way i think that is the coolest color ford ever came out with. Im not one for a step side. but this one is sweet. I love her. Im putting in a stage 2 from troyer. It will add about 80 horses and a little bit more torque. THe edge wont work with it. thats why im selling it.

The differance was night and day. I have never done anything to my truck yet that would give me as much bang for my buck. The install is as easy as pluging it in and routing the wire in the door seal up to the pod that sits on your dash. It should take all of 15 min to do it. The pod just mounts with double sided tape on the dash.

Just let me know if your still interested.

Do you still have the custom-designed mold or the custom pod that comes with it

yes i still have the pod. i have spray painted it gray to match my dash. MPG's is kinda a hard story. it depends on how you drive. Did it help? YES It helped a bunch when i wasn't always putting my foot into it. This will make you want to race every thing that drives past you. LOL! It also depends on what you want.

When i used the 87 tow tune on 87 octane fuel i saw an increase of about 1.5 mpg. When i used the 87 tow tune on 91 octane fuel i saw about 2.5 increase. But that was at a cost of about 6 bucks more a tank. In the end, either way i was seeing more mpg's. The COST per mile was the same on wither tune. I was getting more from the 91 but it cost more. See what i mean.

THe way i figured was if its guna cost the same and one way i got more power. It was just a no brainer to me. LOL. I payed the little bit more at the pump for a longer range. my truck is getting about 16 all around driving. I am able to pull 17 on the highway driving at 65. But we all know how long that last.
