Upgrade problems?

Not sure where to post this question(s):

Some one help me out... I have a 2004 F150 SC with 5.4 and I have been making some upgrades and I am experiencing some draw backs.

First I installed a Cold Air Intake with a Throttle body spacer, then an Edge Programmer and finally dual exhaust.

Last year I took my truck in to the Dealership concerned about vibration, engine stalling, bad throttle response and strange accelleration problems. Naturally, the shop manager quickly blamed the Cold Air Intake for my problems. To make a long story short...Ford replace the Throttle body and update the trucks pcm and everything was back to normal until now!!!! I am getting sluggish acceleration, vibration etc. I took it back to the dealership and they did not find any DTC codes. The Mech. told me I should get a bigger and better Throttle body and that should solve my problem.

Has anyone had this problem? I just want to get some feedback before I go out and purchas a 300.00 throttle body. And I want my performance back!

Thanks!

The throttle body spacers are a waste of money.

What brand of CAI did you install? That can make a difference in performance.

(get rid of the TB spacer)

Your Edge could be causing all the problems you describe if you're not running the correct settings. Get rid of the TB spacer.

I'd really consider the Edge tuner as causing your problems, the cat-back exhaust will not cause anything but better performance. I'd call your Edge vendor and tell them what settings you're using and see if they have suggestions.

And finally, are you saying that you took your truck in to the dealer with the Edge tune installed and they didn't even say anything about THAT?!

Most dealers would take one look at your tunes and say "hit the road, no more warranty.."

Get rid of the TB spacer, it isn't helping you. Then ask Edge about how you're using the tuner.

Thanks for the advice...I did not have the programmer anywhere is site when I went to the dealer.

I will remove the TB spacer this weekend and see it anything changes. I have a Helix Power Tower spacer and a Airmax CAI.

I will get edge a call and see what they can do. I don't think it is the programmer because I just installed the programmer back in April and first TB went bad last June.

Hey uslangleys1,

Just FYI -

If you have the new body style F-150 that came out in 2004, and also have the 5.4 3V engine, then whatever you do, DO NOT EVER attempt to replace it's factory throttle body with any aftermarket "performance" unit, or a unit claimed to be "larger" - the stock throttle body on those trucks is *huge*, and is well suited to support very high power levels, well above 500 RWHP - which means about 650 hp internally. Also, replacing the throttle body on those 5.4 3V F-150's from 2004 & up will lead to problems that, if you are *lucky* can be fixed with a custom tune - but usually those aftermarket throttle bodies for the 3V motors have plastic components (gears, etc) that expand with heat and then you have problems like a stuck throttle at part-throttle, fast idle speeds, etc., and there is no fix for that - and just nothing really to be gained by going with a larger throttle body on those engines.

Also - chances are that it's the intake kit causing the issues, though I would also ditch that TB spacer immediately. See, almost all aftermarket intake kits for these trucks actually lean the engine out significantly (especially on the 3V engines), causing all kinds of problems. The only way to properly compensate for that is with *custom* tuning - which we can handle for you, if you like.

I hope this info helps, please feel free to give us a call to go over any of this & good luck!
